Couple living in Cayman Islands -living costs

Hi there,

Myself and my partner are looking at the possibility of working in the Cayman Islands and would like some advice regarding living costs. We are both teachers and would be both earning around 40000+ ci dollars a year. Would this be sufficient to live comfortably? We would not expect to be living anywhere particularly grand but would want a good standard of living and know that we could afford to live without financial worries. Any thoughs/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Yes you could live on $100USD a year. Budget $2k for rent and $600 for bills, $500 for food, you'd be ok. Depends how you live. Look for threads that I have answered before - you'll love it.

Re: Couple living in Cayman Islands -living costs

Hello,

I'm returning to GCM in Aug. I've run through the forum but haven't found any explicit figures for monthly bills relating to a family. Could someone please give my cost of living monthly figures (below) the once over for me. I've estimated our costs as a family of 3 (2 adults 1 child under 2) as taken from Cayman New Resident (which needs updating...)
Assumptions are - stay at home mum, 3 bed house w/ garden (not WB or SMB, prob Beach Bay/Savanna way), 1 car, 1 scooter, AC use to provide comfort for a child, activities and entertainment as per CNR, non smokers, v light drinkers, v good internet connection, USD75000 salary, aim is to save as much as possible whilst resident for about 5-7 years.

All these are per month (not sure on dental for a family). Would be grateful for any corrections.

Accomodation Exp
Rent KYD 1,400.00
Tel & Mobile KYD 120.00
Water KYD 70.00
Electricity KYD 300.00

Entertainment/Other KYD 500.00

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry - I no longer live in Cayman but I visit regularly. I have an friend who is a real estate agent who could help you with things - I will PM you her name.

Jackson. You shouldn't have to spend any more than CI$50K a year. Some of your figures are a bit low (e.g. rent, electricity), some seem a bit high, but the average is about right. My advice is to live fairly close to your place of work, and to start in an apartment. Your medical insurance premium reflects a pretty comprehensive cover, so dental would almost certainly be included.

Remember to bring plenty of cash for deposits, car-purchase and the like.

Ecayonline.com. Usually sign up for one year.

Hello there, myself and my girlfriend are looking to do a season in the Cayman, October onwards for around 6 months. i wonder if anyone can help answer a few questions.

I am English and she is Spanish so i presume we can both work there?
Can we travel there and find jobs(in hospitality for the high season) and apply for a work permit there? Or do we need a job offer before arriving?

If we have to find jobs, does any one have any contacts we could possibly be forwarded onto!

Many thanks

You can turn up on vacation for 28 days and then possibly extend for a week at a time then and they could put in a temp permit for you. Best to try and get something before so you can get set up quicker and not be paying for hotels. Contact the Ritz Carlton, the hotels, restaurants or dive operators looking for winter staff. Look at ecayonline and be prepared to make some phone calls. I originally went for 8 months and stayed 14 years!

Hi guys I've been offered a role (salary $60,000 US basic) could you advise if a young married couple can afford to live comfortably on the island on that salary? works out about CI$49,000 I believe. My wife plans on finding a job when we get out there but until then I hope we'll earn enough to do more than just "get by" thanks in advance for your advice

Yes, you can live comfortably on CI$50K, though not extravagantly. Google "New Resident Cayman"; that's a magazine that gives you some idea of what you'll spend.
