Swimming Pools
 

Does anyone know roughly the construction cost of a swimming pool in St Lucia (7m x 3m) to be built in a sloping garden or contact details of a reputable builder who can install a pool? We have been quoted by the Bayview developer and the cost seems unreasonably high when compared to other countries and it would be useful to have some comparisons.

I'd be really interested to find out the cost too. How much were you quoted by Bayview, just out of interest?

We were quoted £30250 by the developer and asked to pay 60% up front. We were also told that the final price might be higher due to rising materials and fuel costs but given no indication of how much that might be. As costs are currently falling do you think they'll now be offerring reductions? I don't think so either. Do you think that £30250 is a bit steep for that size of pool?

That's ridiculous. £30+ for a pool that size!
We may look at having a pool at roughly the same size but there's no way it can be that expensive, surely not. If it is, then that's that idea out the window..

We decided a pool wasn't necessary as our villa in Bayview is quite close to the main pool (and as previously mentioned the price was excessive). As an alternative we are considering a hot tub which would be sunk into a patio area and that was about £16k.

Just something else to consider.

I would have expected to pay probably £20000 maximum for a pool that size and that's only due to the nature of the sloping ground and the amount of concrete that would be needed to build a retaining wall, although I don't know the cost of concrete in St Lucia.
As far as the hot tub is concerned we had at first thought about that until the pool option was mentioned and we had considered having ours on our balcony but since they have changed the design a bit the balcony is no longer wide enough for this in any case, but we have gained in interior space what we lost outside. I think £16000 is a lot for a hot tub as you can get really good ones here for £4 - 5000.
I don't know what it would cost to have a patio built to hold it but decking is relatively cheap and easy to do it yourself if you have basic DIY skills.
I suppose we should consider that everything in St Lucia has to be imported and so will cost more than we would expect to pay here, but how much is down to import duty and how much to profiteering?:confused:

Having been in St Lucia recently we spoke to some local business people and they think we would have a similar sized pool built by local builders for around $EC 50000 - much less than the developer at Bayview where the cost has risen further due to exchange rates. Guess who we will get to build our pool:blink:

Our prices for pools at Bayview are now quoted at $70000 US. What do you think of that?:confused:

Ha ha ha ha. I just got up from having fallen off my chair.

We going over next Friday so might look into this whilst we are there. Together with all the customs issues.

We are going for just over 2 weeks so will have much more time to see what we can find out.
