Hi all!

I am a UK trained GP (family physician) and I was wondering if anyone knew of/any ideas of how one would get a job in the Caribbean.

Ideally I would move to Jamaica/Grand Cayman or Barbados but I am open to other islands too.

It has proved almost impossible to find any information on the internet, unlike for other countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc.

Info e.g. job prospects, salary etc would be much appreciated!

For Cayman, your best bet might be to write to one of the clinics listed at the page below, and offer yourself as a locum. That's how you would get a toe in the door, I think. Otherwise, try one of the employment agencies listed in the same online magazine.

It depends upon whether this is a lifestyle or employment move. If employment, forget the grenadines. Here, a gp can setup privately and do reasonably well, but not financially to thecstandards of the uk of course, but enough to be very comfortable. NB for those who dont know the average gp income from the government in the uk is 110k pounds. There is a shortfall in gp's in grenada i suspect, but cuba trains and supplies some also. You would probably as a doctor be able to work here also which most people are not allowed to do, simply to be able to live in this low cost paradise is enough of a draw for many.

The move is purely for lifestyle. The UK pays us very well however we are overworked and healthy work-life balance is almost impossible. I know working in the Caribbean would mean a pay cut but if living costs were lower, I would still be happy.

Looking into Grand Cayman- there don't seem to be any positions for general practitioners at present- I imagine that most don't leave and positions only come up when someone retires.

Tried looking into Jamaica and Barbados- impossible to find any information! I haven't yet looked into Grenada but that too is a possibility.
