Which place in Caribbean?
 

Hi,I want to pack my luggage and move to Caribbean :)Which place is ''easy'' to get work permit?Where I can find job-like in hotel-and stay at least few months.I know my question sounds maybe funny but what I know for now,its not easy at all to move there.....please....help....

There is no shortage of hotel staff right now, in fact due to the global financial crisis hotels have had to lay off staff

You seem like your more after an extended holiday.
Maybe contact the peace corps and see if they have any volunteering positions available for a few months.

Hi,yes I was in Caribbean many times.I was working four years on the Cruise Ships,Miami.I was living also six months in Roatan-Honduras and last year I spent few weeks in Barbados as well...So-thats why I want to be there!I really like it but I know that everybody pay price for this global situation.I just want to find some Island ,find job and ''chill out''-not like in Europe..sounds easy but its not....anyway-I hope one day:(

I always say to people beware. Every country has its own set of challenges, and having been there on holiday for instance is totally different to living somewhere full time. The novelty wears off and what was new to you can become normal day to day stuff :D

Completely agree - visiting a place often gives people the idea that they could live there, but visiting shows very little of the daily life that you'd have if you actually did live there. Much easier to visit and leave in a lot of cases.

Having said that, many of us do choose to live in other countries and we enjoy it. But getting there is not always an easy process. Agatha, to move to the Caribbean you will need a work permit. Given the line of work you are in, it might be difficult to get a work permit for the reasons Mitzyboy indicates. It would be easier if you had a specialty - some skills that could not be performed by a National. If the job can be filled by a National, then it's not likely that the work permit would be approved.

You could apply to jobs in your field and see what happens. The employer processes the work permit papers for you, so they need to be willing to do so.

I should add it also depends on your financial situation. Barbados is not cheap to live in, especially if you have to pay rent, bills, etc. Remember working in the hotel is not going to pay much and you may struggle with your day to day living expenses.

Most of the expats I know living in the caribbean were pretty established before they got there. As mentioned before unless you have specific skills the region is lacking, ie speech and language therapist, or are a Caricom national with a skills certificate, getting a work permit on a lot of islands will be hard.

however, I will also add if you have the financial means to support yourself independently of working for six months or so, why not take an extended vacation to see if this is where you really want to live.

Thanks for all answers...I know nothing is so easy like looks in beginning but I want to try.What Im planning to do? -after next contract go there.My husband is from Honduras so maybe we will back to Roatan again-this is really cheap place and beautiful:wub:.Well-what I know for sure-we have only one live and we have be there where we feel happy and comfortable:)

Roatan sounds very nice. And with your husband being from there, wouldn't that mean you could also get citizenship? That would make your life easier.

Also, it would put you in the Caribbean, which means you could easily travel to other islands on vacation.

Hi, I live in Barbados and what I can tell you about the caribbean as I am sure you have noticed is that life is more laid back here, not like in the big cities where everyone is rushing arround. So that being said there are a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs to make investments and start companies. The caribbean welcomes that. Many people who migrate here do very well in business so I would encourage you, if you have a good idea you and your husband should go for it.

Sorry Coolgbb - we travelled around the caribbean for many years before we settled in the Dominican Republic a number of years ago. However we know that many of the islands are very depressed economically and that incomers are resented. However here in the Dominican Republic new arrivals are welcomed and life is very laid back, but the opportunities for starting up new businesses are not as easy as people would imagine. But if you don't have to work for a living, this is one of the best places in the caribbean.

Unusually the local population here don't seem to resent incomers - which has to be unique in this area. We also have a reasonable population of all nationalities, so that without being overcrowded, we can have a good social scene.

Many of the smaller islands have too few people - most are outnumbered by the dogs, and people get very lonely (thinking of the Bahamas). Others are too commercialised or regulated - everyone needs to check for themselves.
