Default Looking to move to Caribbean, T&C. All advice (esp.re legal employment) very welcome!

Hi all,

We are a 40 y/o professional couple who, having lived in London for a long time, are hankering after a (much!) quieter island life for a few years (or more?!) and are very keen on the Caribbean.

Turks and Caicos is very appealing because of the potential work prospects, the economic growth, and the relaxed pace of life. We have visited, as well as having friends that both live and have lived there so we are under no illusions about how different it is from the UK and especially London, and that is what makes it so appealing!

I have some freelance consultancy work lined up which I would do ad hoc as our intention is to start a family (eeek!). So our move would primarily be based around my partners job, he is a solicitor. This is another reason why T&C is attractive, because his UK legal qualifications would be valid. At least this is as we understand?

We are at the very early stages of putting feelers out, its daunting yet very exciting! I would be very grateful if anyone has any recommendations to help navigate the recruitment/employment process within the legal sector? who best to speak to? thoughts on realistic job prospects in this sector? Any favoured/higher demand areas of legal practice on T&C?

We are ideally looking to relocate by May 2015 latest. Is there anything else we should be thinking about at this stage?

Many thanks in advance, heres hoping for the sunshine soon.....!

Hi Lottie,

We are in the position you would like to be right now, our flights are booked and we are making the move to Turks next month Like your husband my husband will be working in the legal sector as a barrister over there, he came across the job by luck really. We had been looking to relocate to caribbean since the beginning of this year, my husband signed up with a few recruitment agencies that specialise in expat recruitment mainly to the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands but to no avail . I think some of the law firms there prefer uk solicitors to uk barristers, if your husband hasn't already I would suggest he does this. The lawyer website had quite few job listings there. In the end my husband found this job in a legal subscription he subscribes to, so don't discount those too. I hope it works out for you, keep me posted.

Kind regards,

Amazing! Congratulations and how exciting. So pleased for you that your dreams are being realised! I will certainly get him to sign up with some recruitment agencies, this was next step on our timeline so I shall expedite this ASAP! I don't suppose you can suggest any agencies/websites/subscriptions we should be paying close attention to? Thanks for your encouraging words!

Hi,

Here a few of the agencies my husband tried

Personnel 2000
Taylor Root

Job websites
The Lawyer | Legal Jobs, News, Briefings, Training & Industry Insight
Caribbean Jobs Caribbean Job Opportunities and Careers from Caribbean Jobs

Subscriptions
Counsel Magazine

Also your husband could contact law firms directly on a speculative basis as most of the big firms have that facility on their website, where they would keep his CV on file and contact him if something suitable comes up.

I think the legal sector in Turks and Caicos is smaller than the BVI and Cayman so there aren't as many opportunities there but just keep looking.

Good luck in your search

All the best
