Default Looking for job/moving to Bermuda. Police officer looking for non police job.

Hi all,

My girlfriend of 7 years has recently accepted a job working for PWC on a 2 year contract starting in August 2011.

I am a serving police officer in England and am attempting to join her in Bermuda. I intend to take a 2 year career break and try to find a job in Bermuda. I don not want to apply to be a police officer in Bermuda as this would mean I would have to resign from my job and want to keep that open as a security net should things in Bermuda not work out.

Being in the police is quite a specialised job and it seems as though the majority of jobs being advertised are based in finance. I have emailed a couple of security firms (Bermuda Security Group being one of them) but I am yet to receive a reply.

It is now looking as though I will have to wait for my girlfriend to start her job and try and find me something, does anyone have any experience of this, and is there anything else anyone can advise?

Thanks in advance.

Customs? Or does it have to be non govt? What about a civilian job with the police there?

You need to consider this before thinking about the way you would approach finding work in Bermuda.

http://www.bermuda4u.com/Work/bermud..._overview.html

Bermuda is currently in recession and though there has always been a shortage of Bermudian qualified accountants working for firms such as PWC on short-term contracts, that is just about the ONLY area where non-Bermudians have a reasonable chance of getting a work permit, aside from parts of the hospitality industry and insurance, shipping, banking and investments. Note that you are not allowed to look for work when in Bermuda on vacation.

You will need to find something where there is a shortage of Bermudians in that particular field and you can demonstrate skills that would put you at the front of the queue. Something like a personal body-guard for example, though I have no recollection of adverts for this in the Royal Gazette. Bermudians would still probably be able to beat you to it on this.

Work permits are also granted for jobs at the very bottom of the food chain which typically Bermudians turn their noses up at and Immigration know this but this is obviously not to everybody's taste. Immigration really are tough these days.

I also read your thread on bsucks, they missed one question you can only stay for 21 days & there are other rules about returning in so many months etc - check the immigration site.
