Citizenship and CARICOM Passports
 

Hi

I was born in the UK by a St Lucian Mother, I read on the government website that children born outside of St Lucia to a St Lucian parent are citizens. I have enquired with the High Commissioner of St Lucia here in the UK about how to apply for citizenship but there has been no response yet.

When I went to St Lucia I was classified as a 'tourist' which was slightly confusing.

Does anyone know what the process of getting citizenship is like?

Also will I be able to get a CARICOM skills certificate with qualifications up to A levels from the UK? (it says 2 CAPE/ A Levels is equivalent to an associates degree) - I would like to take an extended holiday and i'm interested as to whether I can do it this way

I do not want to live in the caribbean just yet

Just apply for a St Lucia passport? Was your mother born in St Lucia?


Does your mother have an up to date British passport? She may have lost her British nationality when St Lucia became independent.

No my mother was born in St Lucia but moved to the UK before St Lucia gained independence

Another problem is she has not applied for a St Lucian passport, although that doesn't seem to be a issue for her as she is seen as a returning national

Is she aware that she may have lost her British nationality at independence. Depends on circumstances. Is that a problem and if so, is she aware she must reapply for British citizenship?

Hi,

This one is quite simple, get your St Lucian citizenship first, as your mother is St Lucian by birth this is pretty straight forward.
You can get the high commission to send you the forms.

You need to have your mothers birth certificate
Your original birth certificate
If your sir name is different to your mothers maiden name because of marriage you will need her marriage certificate also
some passport photos of yourself
A police certificate of good character, can get that at your local police station (takes a couple of weeks, small fee)
2 St Lucian citizens have to sign your form who have known you for some time.( A couple of your mothers friens can do this)
One of your photos has to be certified and your form will be certified by the High Commissioner.

Once all checked at the high commission they will send it off to St Lucia for final approval and you will get acknowledgment of your citizenship. Voila !!!

There is a fee to do all this but it does not cost that much.
I did it myself a few years back hence why I know the exact process, be warned the high commision can move a bit slow and once you have all your bits together you will have to make an appointment to see them.

It's all worth it in the end.
