Default Another Bermuda thread!

Hi all,

I've been browsing this forum for the past couple of hours, and there's been lots of really good advice and information, so thank you for that!

I'm 26, and have a potential job offer from Bermuda. I work in the Investments industry.

Most questions I would have re: salary, cost of living, accomodation etc. have already been answered so there's only one thing I'd like some advice on.

My partner, also 26, would be interested in coming with me. Her background is in Biopharmaceuticals, and she currently works in a laboratory role.

- Is there anything related to her field of work over there?
- If not, what would be her best bet to find work? Either related or not to her experience?
- Would she have to find something in advance in order to get a work permit?
- Any other barriers to her coming over with me?

Any advice appreciated! Thanks.

Please advise what partner means in your case as it has a bearing on whether that partner can gain access to Bermuda. If she is not a spouse, the possibilities are not very good at all.

Bermuda is not an industrial centre and though there could be specialists onshore there within certain offshore entities based there, such as subs of European drug companies, opportunities would be very few and far between, other than for those already onboard those companies back at HQ or wherever who get transferred to Bermuda.

Other drug companies might simply use Bermuda as a 're-packaging' centre, much as folks like Starbucks use Switzerland as their 'warehouse' for coffee supplied to Holland for 'roasting' prior to shipment to Starbucks UK.

Others still hold their licences and patents in Bermuda.

Now if some entrepreneur came along and actually decided that Bermuda was ideal as an actual centre for development of Biopharmaceutical products for international sales, that might help things along but Bermuda is more an intellectual capital centre than an actual doer of things like R&D.

Hence my use of inverted commas when referring to warehousing and roasting. Sham methods for getting the cost up in the taxable domicile and incomes allocated as much as possible to low and zero tax domiciles.

Hi

New to the forums. Pistolpete2 is correct that you and your partner's status will be important for immigration purposes.

If you are married, you could potentially apply for her to seek employment. Her niche (for Bermuda) job may work in her favour, though she's unlikely to find her current role in Bermuda. But if the skills are transferable to other lab work (e.g. hospital, clinics, etc) then she may stand a good chance of being granted permission to seek employment.

As far as I understand, you cannot ask for this prior to moving to the island and it will be at the discretion of the Ministry of Immigration - so it is not a guarantee.

An alternative route is for her to work with recruiters in Bermuda now (or direct apply to roles open to overseas candidates) to secure employment independent of you. In essence you'd be going as two independently connect people and your terms of employment would be independent of each other.

There's no harm in doing both (e.g. for her to search until move day comes and then to apply for permission if she hasn't found something when you move). It is very important not to overlap the two - she cannot seek employment without permission once she is on the island - the Ministry can (and has) kicked people off the island if they have been found doing this.

Finally, if not working is an option, she can be given permission to reside (even if you are not married) without employment as long as you can evidence to the Ministry that you can support a dependent on your salary.
