I found the worst part of this was the leadup to leaving the UK. That was awful, once we were here it was much easier. Six months in and I still feel amazed that we are in fact, here!
I really hope next year I'm here posting something similar... we hope to move out next summer as well and I'm currently feeling pretty nervous!

The two months have flown by ... house purchase complete, SIN obtained, drivers license swapped, car bought and plated, eldest started school, made some new friends ... and earlier this week had confirmation of a job 
...
So very happy with how things are working out ... and good luck too all you others out there. x

we are moving to NS in 2 months and cant wait.
Can you or anyone else explain how to go about changing your British driving licence to a Canadian one please.

We have just moved back to uk from living in calgary for 3 and half years. Been backfor 4 months and realised we have made a massive mistake. Nova scotia was our first choice but as there wasnt a job in the police force for my husband we decided on calgary. Anyway we are on our way back across the pond and want to settle in Halifax. As for your licence all you need to do is visit the registrations office and they take your pic and fill in a form and thats it. In calgary it took around 3 weeks to arrive. You can still drive as they give you the copy incase the police stop you. Very straightforward indeed.

you go to Access Nova Scotia and tell them you want to surrender your british license for a NS one and they fill all the forms and sort your pics, eye tests etc.
TIP. take copies of your license (card and paper) before you submit them as you wont see them again! And you will need to be able to prove your driving experience to your car insurance company!

its easy peasy to change your british license for a Nova Scotian one.
you go to Access Nova Scotia and tell them you want to surrender your british license for a NS one and they fill all the forms and sort your pics, eye tests etc.
TIP. take copies of your license (card and paper) before you submit them as you wont see them again! And you will need to be able to prove your driving experience to your car insurance company!

we registered our first car purchase at the same time so we had the fees for that as well, and they were able to process both things at the same time so we left with our shiny new drivers licenses and new license plate for the car.

Have had a couple of unexpected areas of slight difference - as in couldn't upload credit on a 'pay as you go' as didn't know what the pound key was......We're trying to organise as many admin things as possible before my husband starts his job 23rd so have SIN and MSI, banking sorted and will swap driving licence today, hopefully. We also plan to buy a house fairly quickly as only have a rental for 3 months and also need to buy a car......any tips for the newly arrived please? Definitely grateful!

Be sure to keep photocopies of your uk licenses as they prove how much driving experience you have, copies of both card and paper! We have used them time and again!
When buying a car have you vehicle checked over by a mechanic first. We bought an older SUV which has cost us a lot of money to fix and put right.
Halifax Chrysler (at Bayers Lake) looked after us (ask for Craig Caruthers and mention Ken & Sharon) We had our newer vehicle from him which has been great, they bent over backwards to make sure everything was right for us.
For insurance check out Eisenhauer Insurance on Lacewood Drive, Rob Peters knows how to insure new arrivals (mention Ken & Sharon). Our initial quote from another company was $2500, Rob sorted us out for $950 ! We have both cars insured with him now for $2300 (I have only a short driving history so its more for me ;-) )
