So . After 5 years and 4 months of living in Canada we have just become Canadian citizens a few days ago. Moving over for us was the right choice we now know. And we can now also stop jumping through all those hoops that are put before us. Advice ? if you can stick it out. It's worth it in the end.

Mine's expires next month. I now have a Canadian Passport so I am not renewing it at this time due to costs and other things to spend my money on. I always want to hold a British passport though so will renew it probably within the year.

Both my sons British passports expired over a year ago but they do have new Canadian passports. At 19 and 22, they can renew the British ones themselves. My husband has around 7 years left on his British passport and no Canadian passport so I guess he should really also get a Canadian one.

Keep renewing it, Glenn! A Canadian passport allows you to live in... well... Canada. Your UK passport gives you the choice of the whole of Europe. Now, I know at the moment, you're riding high and Canada's wonderful and exciting -- I felt the same after 5 years here -- but after 20 years, Canada just feels bland and boring for me and I can't wait to get back to Europe. I am sooo glad I kept my UK passport! At least, that's one part of the next emigration that will be easy!

I was under the impression that you can renew it any time even after it has expired as long as it hasn't expired for a certain amount of time (something like 10 or 20 years, can't remember) and even then as a Brit born you'd be entitled to a Brit passport it would just be handled as an initial application and not a renewal. Has that changed or did I get it wrong?

Yes, you're right, nina, you can still apply for one even after it's expired, but why put yourself through extra hoops? You only need one passport. I just take the view that a UK passport is a lot more valuable than a Canadian one if you wish to move again!

Not quite sure what you mean, how can a passport be useful for moving? Its useful for crossing borders but not needed for residency.h

Not sure what the difference is. Our daughter's UK passport was expired (only a few weeks) but expired nevertheless and the application for a new one was just the same. Send old passport, the form and a picture to Washington, pay loads of $$$ and wait 4 weeks. New UK passport arrives :-) I know that if it's been expire for ages (not sure whether it's 10 or 20 years) it's extra hoops but a few years I was under the impression won't make a difference unless it has changed.
