Oh wow that is so awesome :D congratulations :D
We have just decided today to move to Canada. I know it will take us a while but seeing what you have written has given me something to remember when the journey gets tough. How are your children settling? I hope you do not mind me asking but how old are they (I have three children) |
Re: 6 monhts not a single downside!
Your post made me smile too ..... nice to hear somebody who is really happy!
You'll always get those curmudgeons growling about rose-tinteds, but so long as you are happy then ya-boo to them! :p Many people do have some sticky points before they really feel happy here, but there's nothing in the fine print that says they are compulsory! ;) Outlook and fortune and many other factors can come together for a great result, so CONGRATULATIONS to you! |
Re: 6 monhts not a single downside!
Fab post - I remember all those feelings when I was there on my temp BUNAC visa in 2000 and I was devastated to have to come home! Now 8 years later I am finally getting my butt in gear to get us back!
Emma where in downtown are you living? I lived at College and Bathurst, and out in the Beaches for a little while, and I love the Yonge-Eglington area too. Keep us up to date and hope to meet you in a couple of years for some coffee and Timbits :D |

Hi - Canniversary !! Haha! What a fabulous term!! Love it!!
Just to say that we've been here 6 months and I don't think I'm ever actually going to come down from the High! Cannot literally think of one single downside to being over here versus the UK (obviously miss family - but hey - they're only a plane ride away and they get GREAT holidays!!) Summer was the best summmer ever - SO much to do. Fall is beeeeeutiful, and Winter - well, the snow is just totally AWESOME!!!! Am SO excited about being able to WALK to the skating rink and only needing a subway to go skiing!!! Imagine THAT!!!! :) The Canadians are utterly wonderful, the life for children (SO much is free for them over here!) and adults alike is just out of this world and I thank my lucky stars each and every day that this paradise is a living reality for us! I remember reading posts before coming about how "tough" the first six months are and how you just have to ride through it, but I always knew that that wasn't going to apply to me, and now I have the proof! I have never for one single moment had any regrets about moving over here - and the Canadians LOVE how enthused we are about their country too. Within 6 months I have a fantastic network of friends, a social life far more fun and varied than the one I had in the UK, wake up every single morning FULL of the joys of spring (or winter or whatever!! LOL) and I just can't recommend this country highly enough!! My advice - If you REALLY want it - go for it!! Oh and don't even get me STARTED on Halloween over here!!!! LOL! I have lived in Canada all my life and reading a post like this and others have made me realize how lucky I was to be born in Canada and not have to put up with the crap that the people on this website have to live in Canada.:) I am sure in a few years you will hate the snow. Ben |

Hi Emma!!!
So pleased for you and your partner (I assume!)!!!! It's great to hear things like this, and frankly it's not rose tinted glasses for some, it's real, and it's really happening. Haven't been to Toronto since I was very wee, but me and Vancouver are feeling the same way! I have been here just over 3 months, and I had a wobble after about 6 weeks which lasted about 2 days, then nothing has got me down since! I am just hoping the snow comes west soon, as it's getting close to the mountains opening, but there is a distinct lack of the white stuff around  So - are you here for good? what jobs have you got? Personally I've not met many Canadians socially yet, but the ones at work are now warming up - it's taken them a while, but it's great now. Great post and all the best. Bx |

EmmaGrate is obviously a lady with a wonderful personality. It's been my finding that no matter where I've gone in the world people are wonderful provided I display a friendly, smiling non-judgemental attitude. Much good luck to you Emma. You are, and will continue I'm sure, to be a superb ambassador for your new, adopted country. Canada is so fortunate to have you within its borders.
SO....a quick update..... been here almost 10 months now and not only survived but positively LOVED our first Canadian winter! Honestly I do love the Canadians but they dont' half moan about the snow!!! LOL! Whats to moan about?!!! You can go skiing ALL DAY for about £20!!!!! YOU can go skating for FREE!! Yes thats right - FREE!!!! Yes, its cold, granted, but its a wonderful dry cold that you quickly get used to once you've worked out how to eliminate all draughts with big hats and scarves and gloves and snowpants etc!! Admittedly I don't currently have a drive to shovel (SUCH a big deal over here!!LOL!) and we did have a few weekend trips "snowed off" which was a minor pain, but overall OMGoodness its FANTASTIC!!! LOL! Its like a winter wonderland for kids! How many times did your kids get to come home from school and go sledding or skiing before dinner in the UK?????!! How many times did you get to nip for a quick skate after you went shopping on a Saturday afternoon back home?! I DO admit that when we have the occasional warmer day now I do find myself dreaming about the long hot summer ahead, but that said, its like having the prospect of a fabulous summer holiday - something to look forward to, not waste time comiserating that its not here yet! Nope - for me the seasons out here are just all the perfect balance and mix! You're never short of something to do whatever the weather over here AND the forecasts seem to be spot on so you can actually plan things days ahead of time.....how many times did you say that about the UK???? Still loving it!! :) |

Hi there - my kids are 3.6 and 8 and they are settling in fantastically! All have semi-canadian (very cute!) accents already and are thriving in all the extra curricular activities over here. The schools are amazing. SO much parental inclusion and SO many events - from BBQ's to pjyama movie nights and oh gosh just all manner of wonderful things! I must get them to write a bit each for my website ( www.watch-us-emigrate.com) I'm in the process of updating it - so that could be a good section - cheers! :) How old are your children?? What do they think of the move ahead??

Emma,
Good for you!! Im really glad its all working out for you - you sound soooooo happy! So many people say things like you have mentioned in your post, like "oh it will be tough , but try to ride through it", or "I really miss my old life amd Im really bored here"...etc But not a bit of that from you - and at the 6month mark surely the rose tinted spec thing would be wearing a bit thin - you must be starting to develop some sort of routine - if not already (sounds like you have with friends and a social life) Excellent!! makes me even more enthusiastic for my move out ther in the new year!! Are you all sorted and settled into jobs now? Whereabout in Wales did you used to live? Paul |
