43 years today !
On Saturday, March 14, 1969 I landed at Montreal, in transit to Halifax, N.S. I had one small suitcase and $183 !
Fortunately there was someone who urgently needed my skills and I started work the following Monday. I have never looked back, felt homesick or had any desire to return to the UK to live even though I have visited there on holidays many times. Canada isn't perfect by any means but it has been very good to me and I don't regret a day of it. |
Re: 43 years today !
Congratulations Simon.
Im guessing Canada is a lot more agreeable if you can overwinter in Arizona:) |

Congratulations. Like you, I have been here for 43 years, soon to be 44. No regrets at all. We have a wonderful life here. First in Montreal for 6 years and now in Nova Scotia.

Well done to you as well on a happy and productive immigration and integration. Long may it continue and hope we do as well. (I am not yet 6 months up, so nothing for me to compare with you:o) |
Re: 43 years today !
Belated congratulations :)
What was immigration like back then - did you just turn up and they let you in? Genuinely curious ;) |

What was immigration like back then - did you just turn up and they let you in? Genuinely curious ;) I, as a very young man, had a particular skill which someone in Canada wanted badly. The process was started by them on my behalf in mid November 1968. The whole thing took only about 16 weeks and I landed on March 14, 1969. I have no idea what "stream" I was admitted under. I landed in Montreal and a yellow "Landed Immigrant" card was stapled into my passport. That was it. |

No, you didn't "just turn up".

I apologise for any disrespect there may have been in my phrasing of the question - I was genuinely curious and didn't mean any. |
