Marine Sector Employment Opportunities

Hello everyone,

I kind of happened on this website by pure happenstance and thought it might be worthwhile to help out anyone who has any past marine industry experience with finding employment. Rather than serving my own interests (I work in HR for a marine transportation company), I wanted to give any assistance I could to anyone who might be in the country with past marine experience but who isn't entirely sure about how to go about getting their certification converted to Canadian equivalency or generally where to go about looking for work. As I wager it would be against policy for this site, I won't communicate the name of my employer and won't attempt to solicit any new applicants, but would be more than happy to help out anyone looking for work.

The impetus for this was realising that the UK is the single largest contributor of immigrants to Canada, so I figured... Why not?

Interested to know more. Currently residing in BC however commuting back to UK for employment. Have looked through Transport Canada’s web page however appears they do not accept Applications for CEC without going through there marine system ie go back to college at a vast expense

Hello and welcome to BE.

You correctly guessed that we have site rules https://britishexpats.com/site-rules/ :)

I've moved your post to our "Jobs Offered" sub forum where you can advertise the position that you have without getting into trouble :D

Can you just clarify for anybody interested, are you only looking for those already work authorised i.e. with PR, or are you willing to sponsor applicants and LMIA applications?

You may give a link to the position offered

Presently, positions would be for those who are already in possession of their PR, but steps are being taken presently to pursue those living abroad or not yet in possession of their PR. At some occasion, it's likely that we will have the LMIA process nailed down, but it's only recently that anyone without a PR has been allowed to work aboard Canadian-flagged vessels, so we're all a bit green on this front as yet, I wager.

Do you mind if I ask what certification you presently have? The Canadian system was effectively based on the British, so British licensing typically translates to a direct 1:1 conversion when submitted. The only thing is that you need to perform a couple of exams to confirm the knowledge. We have a number of landed immigrants and new Canadians on our vessels who went through that very process themselves, so any information I'm not able to provide to you I could almost certainly source direct from them.
