you're not canadian, so don't ask for work!

Re: you're not canadian, so don't ask for work!
The kind of anti-immigrant sentiment expressed on this thread is completely outside my experience of Canada (specifically Toronto and environs). I'm not saying there is no discrimination, I think the GTA is rife with hatreds and discriminations in social settings, there are plenty of places where members of one ethnic group will not go for fear of members of another ethnic group. There's also lots of employment discrimination in some trades, an Irish bricklaying firm is as likely to hire someone from Portugal as an Italian firm is an Irishman. However if there's an "us and them" conflict between people who see themselves as belonging here and others as immigrants that's not something I've seen; probably because I rarely meet anyone who self-identities as being unhyphenated.
I'm currently sitting in an office with staff typical of the GTA. From this desk by place of birth the people come from UK (me!) Laos Palestine Macao Iran Greece France Italy India mainland China South Africa Ukraine USA Canada. If the Canadian has an opinion on diversity she keeps it to herself just as workers who have an historic emnity to others keep quiet about it.
Ontario outside the GTA is another world but it's hard to say if an immigrant from another country would be resented more or less than a cradle Canadian from outside the county gene pool.

I've given in sometimes because its easier, I've pronounced things differently my husband won't.
I still forget to call them snickers/runners though, always call them trainers and get a blank look. I asked one customer if they wanted a carrier bag the other week and got a blank expression.

Here's a coincidence.
I just had a Canada Post broad knock at the door to get me to sign for some CDS coins. She was well into the accent. It must have been only the accent that attracted her. My hair is a mess, I'm unshaven, barefoot and in shorts and my Molson T-shirt says 'I can't have sex all the time'. Most attractive.

I have say some of this thread sounds like BS. I have yet to experience any negative attitudes about me being immigrant. Canada is land that is made up from immigrants.

Gibsonlanding,
Sorry to hear from your bad experience. If I was you I would have used a sarcastic comment like
'listen love, you don't have to get all snooty with me, you're only a dolly with tray in a coffee shop ! Besides, you can' talk... you're not Aboriginal Canadian yourself, your not an Inuit or Metis ! Better go back to your little kitchen wash the dishes love.
Then I would have reported her to the manager

I've never had that happen to me either? My accent is pretty soft these days though.
IMO the OP (hi gibsons!) should complain. Cos it's just bad customer service to alienate your customers by pulling crap like that. If I was the owner/manager, I'd want to know. It's totally unprofessional. I don't think it's really discrimination just a stupid teenager who needs a lesson in manners.
