hi there. i have a job offer from a company in dartmouth, but i did get an e-mail from IMP arranging a telephone job interview.
BUT, they never even called me to conduct the interview!!!!! as it turns out , i got offered a job from another company in dartmouth so all is good. very strange though. i never got a call later or an e-mail or anything. |

dave With IMP it's swings and roundabouts really. They are quite a close-knit company due to it being a private company. Certain things could be improved like any company. The shop-floor does have quite a strong union prescence (CAW - Canadian Auto Workers) who at times do seem to be a bit militant. If you require anything which will cost money, ultimately it is dependant on one signature right at the top of the tree. I'm not quite sure what you are talking about with the 4% vacation 'thing'. Can't say I've heard that one. Generally they are considered a 'family' company unlike certain other 'American' based companies who work on the mentality of hire and fire. |
Re: working in nova scotia
The legal minimum vacation entitlement in Canada is 4% of time worked so, of you take a job, take no vacation and then leave, the employer has to give you 4% of what you earned in the period. This is the same as two weeks off per year so, if you work for a year, take a fortnight's paid holiday and then leave the employer doesn't owe you any vacation pay.
Any greater amount of vacation may be negotiated but that, and statutory holidays, is the legal minimum. |

Re: working in nova scotia
The IMP vacation situation is a bit retarded. Your vacation entitlement for the year 1 Apr - 31 Mar is dependent on the amount of vacation time you have 'earned' as of 31 Mar. So if for instance you join the company on the 31 Mar your vacation for the following year is nil, zip, nothing. If you start work on the 30 Sep, then you will have no vacation until 31 Mar, but because you will have worked for the company for 6 months as of 31 Mar, you will have accrued 6 months worth or 50% of your annual entitlement (2 weeks) and so for the following year you will be able to take 1 week off and have it paid. Of course you can take unpaid leave as long as the union will let you.
Most companies will let you take vacation as you accrue it. My wife is the local Welcome Wagon representative and she is meeting a lot of expats who have come over with IMP on work permits and very few of them are happy. Primarily there are on the shop floor and therefore unionised. If the job you have been offered is non-unionized then you will fare much better as Cheddarman has indicated. |
Re: working in nova scotia

i will take on board what you both are saying,i am going on the shop floor,a little bit used to union practises i am currently working at bae systems and they like the unions,it will only be the second permanent job i have had since 1990, the other one was at fls and lasted 2 years (9-11)the rest has been contracting so i am looking forward to the new job and new life, cheers for your info any is greatly received dave |
Re: working in nova scotia
Dave
I know someone who works on the shop floor over at IMP - I'll check with him and ask if it's okay to pass on his email address. There are a lot of people from the UK working on the shop floor at IMP and I'm surprised none of them have replied to your post. However, PM me your email address and I'll put you in touch with him. Incidently, I used to work for BAE Systems and IMP are nothing like BAE!! Are you coming over on a work permit or have you gone through the skilled worker application? Graeme |
Re: working in nova scotia
I have applied for two jobs with IMP, had read receipts but nothing else :(
