Working/Living Between Two Provinces
 

Situation could be to keep family home in Alberta and travel to work in BC each week. Would be handy to know any information/experiences of problems/opportunities with aspects such as taxes, insurance,driving licence, travel etc in this type of situation.

Be ready for a big jump in car insurance premiums, companies do not like out-of-Province plates. This may be particularly complicated with one province being BC.

If taxes are deducted at source, all should take care of itself when you file your T1.

However I would be contacting ICBC and the AB authorities for a definitive answer and get a written response, they can be quite finicky.

I'm not sure if I would use a car in Vancouver, if I did it would be bought/registered there. I would just use the BC address when insuring it. I don't suppose there would be a problem with insuring two cars, one in BC and one in Alberta?

If I was in BC for 5 days a week but home address is Alberta would I keep the driving licence in Alberta and would that be ok for a BC insurance policy. It may be more bother than its worth if the car isn't essential.

I don't know about buying car insurance in BC with an AB driving license but I am sure someone else can answer that question. But since you are keeping your primary residence in AB why do you have to bother with BC red tape for taxes and driving license? If you are travelling every week out of BC as you said then you can just use an AB plated car, no? Also for taxes, you can still use your AB address even if your income is from BC.

I am in the same situation: I worked in BC for the summer (6 months), had a BC salary, had BC taxes deducted, but didn't change my official residence / health card / driver's license to BC for Revenue Canada. . I still used my NS driver's license, health insurance. when doing my tax return , I will claim my tax residence as being in NS. I have a post box as a 'residential address'.. we'll see if it works. First time I'll be doing this. Planning on doing the same next year if it works. It suits my situation. I am not planning on getting property or rental in BC, too expensive.
