working as a dentist in Canada?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me whether a UK trained dentist can work in Canada without re-training or doing more exams etc????

No, can't be done. You need to do the eligibility exam (results valid 2yrs), which qualifies you to apply to dental schools. You then do 2yrs at dental school and either get an equivalency or a full DMD/DDS depending on the school. After that you do national boards (completing your degree doesn't entitle you to register) and if applicable provincial exams - if you move to a different province than your dental school was in.

My OH is a UK BDS, now Canadian DMD too. He won't post on this board but I'm sure he'd be happy to email you or answer any questions via me.

It's an expensive and long process, but it's do-able. You need to be certain of your plans - it's a lot of money to spend and find you didn't like it here after all ;)

Why is this madness?

Shortage of bus drivers, no shortage of dentists.

Simple.

Thinking that as a professional person maybe wanting to try another country it would have been easy. So i go to Dental school for say 5yrs or whatever, then work for how ever many years, fancy a change abroad, only to find its not so easy yet John Smith down the road waltzes in as a Bus Driver cmon Steve play the game.

Having the intelligence/discipline/funds/whatever, to complete the training necessary to become a dentist is an admirable thing but it shouldn't and doesn't, of itself, act as a passport to a life elsewhere unless that training and experience is of value to the country concerned. Perhaps, historically, the Canadian process has been a little less directed towards addressing particular skill shortages but that seems to be changing. Canada has the right to choose the sorts of people/skills it feels it needs to generate and maintain momentum in its economy/society, etc.

Ok, but I think that is to do with the british not looking after their teeth as oppose to the dentists not being up to the job!! In britain people only do the minimal due to them on the NHS whereas in the US they expect to pay. The sooner britain goes private the better to all teeth!!:confused:

But that is the game. ;)

It's all about what occupations are in demand in Canada.

Does it have to be Canada or would Australia or New Zealand be options for her?

The dentists I had in the UK were shocking. I had little choice where to go when moving and then I was literally butchered - botched root canals and poorly fitted crowns.
Thankfully being rectified over in here in Canada thanks to my dental insurance through work.
