Working in Canada as a Medical Doctor
Hey guys,
I have had a hunt through and can't find where anyone has already asked this, so I apologise now if this has been answered elsewhere... I am currently in the process of researching emigrating to Canada as a registered nurse, of which there is plenty of information, especially on this site... However, my partner is a Doctor (currently coming to the end of his F2 year, for those of you in the know), and we are finding it very difficult to find information for what it will be like for him to find work in Canada... It appears that the basic medical degree is the same, but from there we can't seem to find any more info... Please can anyone either post some information, or point us in the right direction to find the info ourselves??? Many thanks in advance :) Damian |
Re: Working in Canada as a Medical Doctor
There are a few thread about working as a doctor but a lot will depend on experience and passing Canadian exams.
In regards your training, not sure how long ago you trained but make sure your transcripts show Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics, Adult both clinical and theory. Also not sure what route you are looking at, or province, be aware nursing is no longer on the FSW list |
Re: Working in Canada as a Medical Doctor
No clue about cross qualification, but I can assure you that in Sooke they are very short of medical practitioners.
It seems that, once you get on a doctors waiting list, you don't get off the list unless someone dies! I'm not kidding! We have Canadian friends (couple and a daughter) that moved here from Calgary almost three years ago. They applied on arrival in Sooke. They are still on the waiting list. Not sure if this is indicative of a shortage of doctors throughout the province but there is a definite shortage in our area that's for sure. |
Re: Working in Canada as a Medical Doctor
Moving to Canada as a doctor is best once you qualify as a GP or specialist with a CCT
This is because its almost impossible to get a canadian residency position- our junior dr ST posts here in the UK Once qualified with aCCT though the doors open wider but it's still tough Ask him to google ...physician recruitment ... And then fill in all provinces one by one! He'll come up with health force ontario, alberta physician link etc etc Another problem is all provinces have different rules May be better to finish training here with an ear to the ground incanada about the rules for the different provinces you're interested in Least complicated and risky option Hope that helps |

If you want to come to the Brockville Ontario area, let me know as I have a contact who recruits Physicians.
Also look on Linked IN, several groups there on Canada and Medical Doctors. |

I found out yesterday that in my region there are 80,000 people without a doctor. That's about 20% of the population! My neighbourhood alone could fill a new doctor's patient list immediately (and nobody would care if he didn't speak French). |
