Default IT work in Vancouver / Toronto? Scary!

Hello,
I am struggling by a point or two to get a PR visa, so I am going to come to Canada for a year on a 12 month workers holiday visa and then apply for my PR…I will get 5 points more for adaptability.
However I am very concerned about moving to Canada in December, I am looking at moving to Vancouver or Toronto.

I work as a Program Manager within the area of Test, basically Test Management, I look up jobs all the time on monster, workopolis and I see in general very little IT jobs being advertised.

Is it that bad in Canada? I am worried that I will come to Canada and I wont be able to find a job in IT and therefore it is unhealthy for an IT person like myself to be out of the IT industry for a pro-longed period of time….more importantly I wont have the funds to survive. I am only coming over with about $10,000k +

Will i struggle finding IT contracting work?

One more thing, When can I apply for PR when I can get those extra 5 points? Can I apply within Canada? I remember it says I have to be there for 12 months? Visa via BUNAC .

Your advice on this matter is much appreciated,

Thank you,
ColdAsIce

As far as I can tell, Vancouver is still looking for good people in IT. A lot of the people I've interviewed aren't very good. I don't know what the situation is with QA managers. I know that we have problems filling a position for senior devs.

I can't comment on Toronto.

Yeah - emigrating is scary. So what? If you believe it's the right thing to do then get on with it. You can always go back. $100k should keep you very comfortably.

Oh, and if you come to Vancouver then getting PNP should be easy if you have a job. You could always just get a new work permit, wait 2 years, and then go via the Canada Experience Class.

Or even $10,000k - why bother working?

I'm doing a job hunt right now and slightly wishing I was in QA. There are quite a few advertised jobs here... thats before you start networking

I don't think you can claim 5 extra points from doing a BUNAC visa as it's only a year. I might be wrong though.....

As for work - who knows. It's not the best timing, but you won't really know until you pick up the phone and start calling employers. If cash gets tight you can always get seasonal ski work like most on working hioliday visas.

10,000k is $10,000,000..I agree with Alan2005...retire mate...

But if this was a typo:

Not much I.T work in Canada if you ask me...alot in recent years has gone to India. Alot of what is left is in outsourcing companies (IBM, GCI, HP etc) and they are all sweatshops unless you can get a more senior position (manager, consultant etc).

That said, don't let this put you off...persue your dreams...good idea with the 12 month visa/5 points (positive attitude/plan)...I know HSBC is still a big I.T employer in Vancouver.
