work permit - to work and study in canada

Hello,
I am currently living in Canada on a work permit and have been here for the past year. I am hoping to extend my stay for a couple of years.

At the moment I am considering doing a Distance Learning or part time Masters course really just as a self improvement thing. My current work permit stipulates that I am not permitted to study in Canada - do you know what the rules are surrounding this, and whether I can have it changed so I can work and study in Canada?

Also does anyone know anything about the rules of being an international student, both home and abroad?
After doing some research I think I am classed as a Int. student in England, therefore I would have to pay a much higher cost for the degree. In Canada I am sure that I am classed as an international student also.. seems a bit unfair.

If anyone has any advice/ knowledge of these issues I would be very grateful for your input.

I am pretty sure that it means you cant go to school in canada. If you chose to study by distance learning from the UK then its not going to school

my work permit states

unless authorized, prohibited from attending any educational institution and taking any academic, professional or vocational training course
i wonder... is there even a possibility to get an authorization for one of this stuff?
i mean, given that there are some evening classes at the local college - like pottery or an introduction to literature - which aren't related in any way with my work but which would be fun to attend... i wouldn't be allowed to attend them
