Work permit extension. How long does it take?
 

Hi,

I'm about to request a work permit extension (I'm working as an intern) because my company wants to keep me. :)

- How long does it take in average to get an answer?
- Can I keep working if my work permit expires and my SIN expires, while I'm waiting for an answer to the extension application? :confused:

Our lawyer told us that as long as we had an application in to renew our work permits that our status was maintained so our SIN number etc was still valid.

Our work permits only took two to three weeks to be processed.

It took about 4 weeks to get our work permit renewed - it was renewed for a further 3 years. However, my partner's (whose permit is issued off the back of mine) was given only 2 and a half years as that's when his UK passport expires.

The only stress we had was knowing that our current BC health card had expired and we therefore had no proof of coverage. Your employer has to give you a form to extend your BC health. It takes a few weeks, and they will send you another card to show your new expiry date.

My husbands original work permit ran out before he got the new one (took forever - about 4/5 weeks if I remember rightly). He called immigration up and explained the situation, they told him to just carry on as he was! COOL!
