IT work (Oracle in Ottawa) - experiences/anecdotes

Hi all,

We're at the "request for medicals" stage in the PR process. We're looking to go to Ottawa next May if we pass the medicals (new baby on the way, so can't go any sooner).

I've read a few posts about finding IT work, some sying it's a total nightmare, others more positive.

Are there any other Oracle professionals out there (DBA/Apps DBA) who've been through the job hunting process, or know of somebody who has?

I'm thinking about Ottawa in particular.

I've contacted a couple of agents, and I've seen the various 'networking is the key' posts.

Any "DBA's walk into high paid careers as soon as they arrive" posts would be most welcome :)

I can't help much (at all even) except maybe to say that the chances of getting those final kinds of posts are slim. But you knew that anyway ;)

I like your name though, I know from whence it came and even though someone who's come across it having kids makes me feel old, it's nice to know I wasn't the only one reading them :D

I can't help with anything when it comes to IT work, but if you have any specific questions about Ottawa, feel free to ask. :)

Ah yes, the books are stored away ready for the kids(me) to read them(again) - been a long time since I've seen Flint, Tanis et al - now I feel old :)

Wannabe - thanks for the offer - I imagine I'll be posting a lot more questions about Ottawa as the time draws nearer and the panic sets in - I've been 6/7 times (Metcalfe area and The Glebe), love the place.

Sean Boxer - nice to see I won't be the only claret and blue in the city.

Sean/Wannabe - are you working in Ottawa? What field, was it difficult and do you speak French??

BTW - don't need a girlfriend - but a babysitter would be nice :D

It's your lucky day - I'm a professional caregiver, and might be persuaded to do some babysitting on my spare time. :)
That answers what I'm doing here, I guess - it wasn't hard to find a job, since I'm really good at what I do *grin*. I do speak a bit of French, but want to take classes to improve - right now my roomie's (French) kids are giggling at me every time I try out some new phrases on them...

Welcome to Ottawa! :D

Brilliant, I'll open a new thread at some point - pick your brains about all that sort of stuff

Cheers

You haven't been to the Market yet? Wannabe and Sean will recall the last meet up we all had there...

Been to a few bars there - an Irish one, one on the corner near a Fish Restaurant upstairs, and one somewhere near that cafe on the corner (Double Deckers or something).
When I used to go as a single man, I'd start with my friends in The Glebe, then make our way into town - by the time I got to the Market...... - Do remember Zaphods though - and some other club where I felt like the best pool player in the world 'cos the pockets were big enough to fall in.

It was awful, they're all a bunch of freaks (especially that Wannabe) - you've been warned.
