No. I expect the EU countries to provide some sort of long term work permit to the Brexit victims already working there while the British bulldoze the filthy foreigners into the sea.

Actually most of what I've read so far has focused on the UK's plans to provide for EU citizens resident in Britain after Brexit. Saying that though, I don't routinely keep up with the continental European news and the UK also tends to take a stricter stance on immigration controls than most other EU countries so it's possible that it's not as big a deal for the Schengen countries. It's not going to be in Spain's interest for example to start deporting British residents en masse in a couple of years from now.

When you head off for a break this year, spare a thought for workers who have unlimited holidays

Unlimited vacation is the policy where I work. There was some skepticism when it was first introduced, but it's actually working out quite well for most people. We're an IT company and junior staff started with three weeks and senior staff with four or five (based on years of experience in the profession rather than time served with the company), so vacation was never that bad anyway. As far as I can tell, everyone takes whatever vacation they need, which is between 3 and 6 weeks in the teams I've worked with. Bonus is also related to billable hours, so employees have the option to take less time and receive more bonus, or vice versa. No-one really expects to take 12 weeks and be able to perform their job properly! It's also great for junior employees (e.g. recent graduates), who are no not restricted to 2 weeks when they start working.

I've been in Canada for a decade with 4 jobs (2 private, 1 educational institution and 1 Government) and I've never had less than 3 weeks holidays.
Government is the best because you can do compress hours and take a day off every 2 weeks. Overtime can be banked and you get 1.5 times in holidays that don't ever expire. You can also work from home, which helps a lot

I think some people have been very very fortunate.. the standard here in Ontario (unless you are in a specialist job and can make demands) is 1 week.

Subsidiaries of European companies seem to be more generous with vacation time too, at least that has been my experience working in the banking industry both in the US and now in Canada since the 80's. I usually end up carrying vacation time over to the next year, and have always had enough vacation time to do what I need to do each year.

Indeed. I have had at least 15 different employers in Canada, and the most any of the employers have done is the minimum required by BC labor standard.

Unless one has some skills/in demand/management type work, us little workers have little to no grounds to negotiate, its a take it or leave type thing

I do think there's a real lack of appreciation sometimes on BE, that many Brits benefit from better conditions (wages, vacation time and health benefits) than those afforded to the general populace.

To be fair, many Brits are here because they are sought after, so in some ways it's useful that Brits looking to come to Canada - if also with skills in demand - are made aware of it.

But sometimes it just comes across as anything less is "impossible to manage" when most Canadians and some others do get by (and better) with less.

This year was the exception, but I don't usually take my full allotment of time off in a year and its only 10 days....

I think the regulations state a minimum of 2 weeks after a full year of employment and a pro rated amount for the first year.

You are right, it is..

At a former employment in an admin position at a large company, it was 1 week during the first year - not to be taken in one block - hence my memory playing tricks, lol. Thanks for the reminder
This employment standard has two parts: vacation time and vacation pay. Employees with less than five years of employment are entitled to two weeks of vacation time after each 12-month vacation entitlement year. Employees with five or more years of employment are entitled to three weeks of vacation time. Ordinarily, a vacation entitlement year is a recurring 12-month period beginning on the date of hire.
(The increased entitlements to vacation time and vacation pay apply to vacation entitlement years or stub periods that end on or after December 31, 2017.)

Media keeps reporting a teacher shortage in BC currently.

That's because of last year's Supreme Court decision that Christy Clark had been wrong to unilaterally change the contract and increase class size. Class sizes thus had to be reduced to that stated in the contract, which meant a sudden need for teachers ....... the rush to hire teachers over last summer hired all the teachers who had been on the On Call list for years and years, plus new teachers. There's also been problems hiring teachers (and keeping them) in some of the more isolated areas in northern BC.

It also allowed teachers to get jobs outside Metro Vancouver and move where they could afford to buy a house.

Now the shortage seems to be in Vancouver, for certain specialist teachers everywhere, and to get the TOC list up to "normal".

BC also faces the fact that teachers here are paid less than in Ontario.

It isn't an easy job, despite the long summer break ............... I managed 2½ years teaching in the UK and would never have considered doing it here. You really do have to love children and love teaching
