Work Canada with BUNAC
Hi,
I'm planning on taking a gap year in my final year of uni next year. I want to work in Canada via internship/placements where it's paid or even a proper job. I'm looking a specific cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. I really want work in Montreal but I can't speak French, do you think it's possible to work in Montreal with no French, or am I looking at a dead end. Ok, so I've taken a look at BUNAC, AIESEC and IAESTE and the most promising one seems to be Work Canada with BUNAC. I mean with that it can guarantee that I'll be somewhere in Canada whereas the other ones I'll be in some other country. But can you choose specifically which city you want to go to or is it based on different factors? Also, I have no work experience whatsoever, the only thing helping me is my academics on my CV, would I even stand a chance of getting into Work Canada with BUNAC? What about finding a job? And I looked at the blogs and videos on the BUNAC site and the only jobs that participants seem to take are instructor type jobs on ski resorts, things in hotels, theme parks, clubs and pubs and all those stuff. Are the job types really restricted to those I just mentioned? Or can you get different ones such as those pertaining to information technology? I'm just not keen on being an instructor or working in a pub, at all. Are there other ways to find jobs in Canada? Right now I'm searching for companies in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal and I'm going to phone them if they are willing to do internships for someone from UK. Not sure how far I will go with that. Would I have to tailor my CV to the Canadian format? What is the application process? Are there interviews in applying to BUNAC? And what do they take into consideration in confirming a student onto the programme, what criterias are they looking for in a student? Finally, are there any other programmes out there such as AIESEC and BUNAC that help students or whatever with working abroad? |

There are several Cities LIKE the three listed, are you looking at just those three OR all the cities LIKE them? YES you can find work in Montreal as an anglophone, but it would be easier if you had French. Why Montreal especially? Once you are on the BUNAC program you can work ANYWHERE in Canada. You are not restricted to any kind of work (I have a 'friend' who was Distribution Manager for Coca Cola in Calgary) You COULD Tailor your CV but as you're on the BUNAC program (potentially) it's pretty pointless. Just rename it as Resume. |

OK several points here (and YES I can a pedant), you intend to take a gap year BEFORE not IN your final year.

Well, currently I'm in my second year. Then hopefully I'll be on BUNAC for one year after that. Then come back for my final year.
Seriously I would think again about BUNAC if you cant manage to answer simple questions. |

Re: Work Canada with BUNAC
Yazy, I am also planning to apply for and use the BUNAC Work Canada visa. I could provide you with some information, but I think it would be much more beneficial to you to simply Copy & Paste your first post in this thread into an e-mail sent directly to BUNAC.

Bear in mind that a lot of people do Work Canada as a gap year before or after university, or as a career break for those who already have one. As they're really there for the novelty of being in another country, to have new experiences and relax - and are often not stacked with cash either - they tend to do more casual jobs such as those you mention. You can go there through BUNAC and look for career work though, and there are people on this forum who have done so and gained permanent residence thereafter. However as you're only part-way through uni it may be better to just go and find whatever work you can, as even if you did find a professional job you'd have to gve it up to go back to uni. You would be eligible for another visa in the future when you could go back again, should you enjoy it the first time. Incidentally you can do an IAESTE placement after you're graduated too, and that can be near enough anywhere depending on what they offer. Thinking about it if you were to follow what I've just said you'd basically be mirroring my life plan from the last 3-4 years but hey, you could do worse :p.

Well having done both BUNAC Work Canada (and preparing for a second stint) and IAESTE I should be reasonably well-informed to comment...basically as the guy who replied to you earlier stated correctly - albeit pretty rudely - the answers to most of your questions can be found on the BUNAC website. In a nutshell though, it's just an open visa for a year that pretty much anyone 18-30 can apply for, the only difference being whether it's a student or non-student visa you have, for which you would have the former if you're taking a deferred year. The visa types are no different once you arrive in Canada.

There is plenty of advice on how to do this on the wiki section of this website and BUNAC offer some hints with their literature. Respectively; simple as long as you read the instructions carefully, no, and in your case just that you have a university place confirmed after you return from your BUNAC year. |

Hey, how did you do your CV when applying for the visa/applying for BUNAC? I emailed them and they said it must be one page only. How did you do it? What did you focus on, etc?

Butch isn't rude - just truthful and you'll find he's helped a lot of people on here - many behind the scenes - you know a bit like the charity work people don't want to talk about.
