wireless network in rural alberta homes?

well, our house sale is going nicely, and all being well we will be back in canada next month. so need to sort the important things, like the internet!!

my family have basic dial up intenet in their house about 19kms outisde of cochrane, near water valley. now im taking my laptop, which only has wireless internet, no modem built in. also i plan on getting a wifi internet radio so i can get my BBc radio 2 fix. so basically we need broadband/ DSL of some description which i can then connect a wireless router to.

does anyone know any good providers for rural alberta. and can someone clarify is setting up wireless network in canada basically the same as here, ie i have a ADSL router with the built in boradband modem which i connect to th phone line and then all the computers connect to that wirelessly for the net..

thanks

Wifi in Canada, pull the other one! I can't get broadband over the phone line and I'm not far out of a major Canadian city. Ask Bell about ADSL (take any promise with a load of salt) or the TV cable provider (if any) about their offerings but I think you'll need to get a satellite or microwave dish.

I'm using Wireless access right now in Kamloops. Try www.fatport.com and see if you are covered?

no, i think you misunderstand me.

i simply want home broadband/dsl. and then will connect a wireless router so i can connect anywhere in the house wirelessly. not a wifi hotspot.

Oh I see :o why not try one of the main telecommunication co's in Alberta (Alberta Supernet?) and tap in your postcode and check?

Worst case you could always connect via your ethernet port until your Canadian router arrives.

yeh i can connect via an ethernet port if i have boradband. but at the moment we only have dial up. so first i need to find a good DSL provider. the rotuer bit aftet that should be easy to set up i guess like anywhere else.

Think its http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ that do the broadband supply in Calgary , you just need a wireless router and the principle is the same.

Xplornet is a popular satelite provider if you are too far off the beaten track for the phone and cable companies to help.

We use xplornet and they are pretty good but don't expect the speeds quoted unless you live near the tower, we're 13kms away and get approx 2.5meg speed on a good day

Better than 2.4 kps;)

We gave up on dial up at home, and broadband is not available where we are a price we want to pay through the phone or cable company, so I just abuse my work IT privileges now instead.

Just a word of warning from someone who knows absolutely nothing about computers - we had a satelite system and it cost $4600 for about 10 hours use!! That was with Telus. Got rid of that system pretty dam quick!

Our neighbour has just talked to them. (She's waited months for Bell to come and set up ADSL which they had promised was coming this year, they did eventually come with a modem but then found that it doesn't work because the phone lines and exchange don't support it. They're not much good with phone stuff.) The set up cost for xplornet is brutal, $1200 or so. It's cheaper to go with a real satellite, $800 + $135/month, one curious snag/advantage being that websites then think you're in Illinois.
