Windsor

How come you can buy a mansion with 8 bedrooms and 5,000 acres of land for £3.50 (three dollars fifty) in Windsor but there's no work? It's hundreds of miles from civilisation and on the doorstep of Detroit, the most down and out piece of real estate north of Mexico. Who lives there and how do they make a living??

Re: Windsor

Windsor has a thriving Auto industry, about 3 1/2 hours from TO, pleasant year round climate and, although housing is comparably less expensive, it is certainly not the prices you are quoting.

$200,000 will buy a very comfortable home, $1,000,000 if you want on the water.

Large Casino, many quality Hotels, 4 Hospitals, friendly people.

Thrive...

To make steady progress; prosper.
To grow vigorously; flourish:

Windsor? I don't think so...

We live in Windsor and trust me it is not a THRIVING city at all. The auto industry is dieing on its feet. Housing is cheap but thats because everyone is selling up and moving out West, so it is a buyers market.
Yes it does have a large casino (OH working on the expansion), but no-one goes there as no-one has any money to spend in there.
Can't comment on hotels and especially the hospitals as I've been fortunate enough not the frequent them!
Climate, yes the winters are milder here compared to other parts of the country, but when that humidity hits in the summer its brutal.
All in all, as my nephews (and they have lived here for over 18 years), sum up Windsor, they call it the arm pit of Canada - and I have to agree. Can't wait to get out of here. For me, Windsor sucks. Do you want to buy our house?

Clearly I'm an expert with my fortnight's worth of living here... ;)

It's a fantastic time to buy... but completely pointless if you haven't got a job. The place I bought was up for almost 2yrs and I got it for 20% less than their original asking price. I felt a bit sorry for the vendors, which is a first!

Re Detroit - the downtown is nice enough, the part around the baseball and the opera looks well used and lively. And have you seen the suburbs? I gps-ed a furniture store I wanted to go to, nothing special. When I got to the mall it was in, I seriously thought the child and I would be ejected for looking like scruffs. I've never seen such a grand suburban mall. Firstly, stores don't open there, they "arrive" - and it's not a mall, it's a "collection" hahaha :D I would have needed to take up a collection to afford anything much in there  The cars in the lot were unbelievable. Obviously it's hard times around here but the general wealth compared to somewhere like Winnipeg is astounding.

Are you thinking about a visit Steve? I've a pool to be dug, bring a spade ;)

We were looking at Windsor area last year as a place to live, the kids, who are in their late teens, thought that living next door to Detroit was really 'cool'. However, it was the jobs thing which turned us away. It seems the place is reliant on Detroit to prosper, and the news hasn't always been good.
So if you can afford a pool, what the hell do you 2 do? Or should I not ask:embaressed_smile:

Re: Windsor

Windsor is car dependent and is suffering, but it is not totally dead, who knows what is around the corner.

London is a nice community with reasonable housing.

We live in Collingwood area, but neither of us work full time.

Properties going up at least 15% per annum.

Collingwood is gorgeous. We considered moving there, but property would be too expensive and I'm not sure if there would be enough work without the 45 minute commute to Barrie. Good skiing around Collingwood though!

Don't all the (semi) retired people live in the Olde Town ?

Re: Windsor

I once asked a friend of mine who owned several properties in Hawaii why he payed so much, the answer is because next year it will be worth more.

We live in the Town of the Blue Mountains, 2,000,000 yearly visitors and a major Retirement destination for people from GTA.

It is not the housing Cost, but the cost of the bike, the fishing poles, the hiking shoes, the boat, the ski doo, the tennis racquets , the golf clubs, etc, accessible recreation with no line ups and in most cases no entry fees.

The other thought is that as Boomers retire there will be less recreational properties available, this way, they have a place to stay.

Best Fish and Chips ever, including the UK, Captain's Corners in Meaford.

I'm just curious to know what promted you to start off a new thread with an unprompted assault on a specific town? Will this be part of a series of attacks on randomly chosen towns or was it just a one-off? (I'm hoping its the former as I look forward to seeing which town will be next)

unprompted assault ?
I was merely curious how people make a living in the Windsor area, we looked at settling there but other than the car industry I couldn't see any way of getting a job.
