Will my Wii Work in Canada?

This may seem like a extremly silly question, but do you think that my Nintendo Wii will work in Canada?

I had this discussion with my OH and we think yes it will work over there but you will not be able to access the net with it or download games on it.

We are taking ours as we have bought loads of old games with it, and we will buy a new one too (hopefully)

No we are having to sell our xbox 360 ,ps2 as they are no good there even with plug adaptor as power is to slow for the cooling fans and full electric board inside we was told by microsoft when we rang them,

And we know someone in calgary that chips and supplies xboxs and ps2s

Not a silly question at all.

Compatibility between consoles and TVs is down to what encoding they display/output. Now the UK uses a format called PAL, and America/Canada uses NTSC. These two formats do not play nice with eachother.

If your TV over in Canada can accept PAL signals as well as the default NTSC signals, then yes it will work fine. Otherwise no, it probably won't work unless you get some sort of PAL to NTSC converter.

Another thing to consider is that Canadian/US games will not work in your UK Wii console, nor will UK games work in your Canadian/US console.

Hope that helps.

Re: Will my Wii Work in Canada?

You need to consider a couple of things :-

Your UK wii will be expecting 230/240v, the supply in Canada is 110v - you could get a step up inverter which will provide a 230v supply and the wii will be happy.

By default the wii will output a PAL signal as described above - however, if you get a "component" cable, it will output a 480p component signal, which should be accepted by any modern TV in Canada.

Games - it will only play games sourced in Europe, so you will need to take a supply with you or order them off the net to be delivered over there.

If you don't already have a wii, probably best waiting till you get there...

But will our Wii controllers work with the canadian Wiis? We bought extra ones for the kids and don't want to have to sell and re-buy canadian controllers unless we have to.
PS... How much are they out there?

A word of warning on the PAL-to-NTSC decoder: we tried this solution for our PS2, but quickly gave up. There's about a half-second processing delay in the decoder which means by the time you see what's going on on screen you've already crashed/been shot/fallen in the swamp/insert appropriate phrase for your game here! After a weekend of much head-scratching and frustration we swapped our PS2 with a friend who was heading back to the UK, in exchange for some other goodies that wouldn't have been much use to him in 240-volt-land.

We should try and set up some kind of swap shop, for people going to Canada and people coming back.

Shall I start:
