Default Will I find a job and can we survive?

Hello.

We are a family of 4 (4 year old and 6 year old) who are thinking of moving over to Canada. My wife is a Canadian citizen and was brought up in Canada but she has been living in Wales with me for about 8 years now. She hasn't enjoyed it at all and really wants to move back to Canada as she feels the quality of life, community and education is much better for our children. Her parents and brothers and sisters live in Canada and they are happy for us to stay with them until we both find jobs. My wife is happy to get anything possible but I want a job in my field.

My main concern is the ability to financially support my family. I am a Head of Year in a primary school here and currently earn 38k per year. We would be moving to Mississauga or an area around which I understand is quite expensive (when we decided to rent).

So my main question is would I be able to get a job in the education field as a lecturer or director of education. I don't really want to work in school as I know jobs are scarce. I have a Bsc in Sports Science , a PGCE and also a Masters in Education. Does anyone know type of jobs I will be able to get with my Masters? I know everyone's situation is different but is it possible for a family of 4 to survive on a wage of 5k per month? I am also hoping to sell our house and come over with 30kCAD.

Thank you in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!

Coping financially can encompass several things, while employment is one aspect, cost of living is another. One area is real estate. You can peruse realtor.ca and search the Mississauga area to get an idea of home costs. You certainly have the advantage of a stronger currency.

I do not work in the education field. I'm sure others will chime in regaining specific employment opportunities in that area and the transfer of certifications and education. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

ps my wife's aunt lives in North Wales

It sounds to me that you should be looking at the excellent Colleges in Ontario. Here is a list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ges_in_Ontario
Colleges in Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville, Kitchener, even London ON at a pinch are commutable for Mississauga. Check out which ones have a Sport Science or related department*.

Can a family of 4 live on $60K a year? Yes, but I wouldn't want to try.

*ETA Sports science is often called kinesiology in Canada, I'm not sure if the term is used where you are.

Thanks for your reply. So does that mean that I don't need to transfer my qualification? I want to teach in the education field but not sports related. Like a lecturer teacher education etc.
So 60k would be really tight with coat of living etc?
All your help is amazing.

If anyone has anything to offer please do!

Usually it does. College lecturers (like University Profs) don't need to transfer qualification through, in your case, the Ontario College of Teachers, which could be a royal pain in the arse if you wanted to teach in a provincially administered school. You can check yourself through the links to individual Colleges, but my impression is that Teacher Education is mostly a University function. I may be wrong.

Great advice! Thank you!

Has anyone actually been over from the UK as a college teacher or lecturer?

really excited to start the process once my research is complete.
Also I Do believe that 60k will be difficult to live in but I'm thinking worst case scenario.

I hope so. I'd think that full time College lecturer would make more than that. Hang on, I'll check.

Edit: Dinner was served: later.

Thank you!

Hopefully someone who has been over in the education field can share their views.

Thanks

To give you an idea, here is a job posting for the Kinesiology dept at McMaster University in Hamilton (about 40m from Mississauga - housing is a little cheaper too). For this one they require a PhD, as do many.

This might be of use to you.

If you do wish to teach in Ontario at a publicly funded school or college you will need to register with the Ontario College of Teachers (governing body). https://www.oct.ca/becoming-a-teache...cated-teachers

Probably worth doing anyway

Thank you so much for your reply. I won't be working in the kinesiology field because I don't have the experience in this field. I only did my undergrad and moved into the education field.
so I want to teach the next generation of teachers providing my expertise on classroom management and learning styles and behaviour management etc. I have a lot of teaching experience as well as a masters in education.
I will definitley start the registration process with the ontario college of teachers and keep am eye on their possible job postings.

You may struggle to find a position 'training the teachers' as you will be in competition with the thousands of teachers already in Ontario (as well as those with PhD's) who have years of Canadian experience. https://globalnews.ca/news/5132545/o...hers-job-cuts/

Ok so I will look for other jobs that require an MA in Education as I want to stay in my field. I don't really want to be retraining in another field. I will research and see what other jobs I can do in Canada with a MA in Education or if it can be versatile in getting another job.
