Will Canada ever join the U.S.?

I mean the two countries are similar in so many ways except for the province of Quebec. I think it's really time that they merge into one country. If not, they should have one currency and open borders just like the Europeans have now. A canadian should be allowed to work in the U.S. and vice versa.

Share your opinion with us...do you think both countries are going towards this direction?

No, I don't think the two countries will ever become one. I don't think there is a need for it.

I could possibly see the two countries someday sharing a new currency (like the Euro), but even that is unlikely to happen anytime soon in my opinion.

What if Quebec seceeds?

What if Quebec seceeds from Canada which, whether we like it or not, is going to happen in their next referendum, wouldn't you think that would be the natural thing to happen especially that the Maritimes will be separated from the rest of Canada by the establishment of the new Quebec country?

As an American married to a Canadian who are both living in the US, either of us wish to see Canada and America become one nation. Although both are democratic, we are light years apart on many issues governmental. Just look how Canadians "elect" their prime minister and how they lose millions of dollars and the agency responsible does not have to account for the loss.

Besides Canadians have the TN-1 visa which allows many Canadians to live and work in the US as long as they have the qualifying education and an employer in the US. They need only get a quick paper visa at the border.

Quebec is not going to leave Canada and give up all the freebies they now enjoy by whining and moaning to the Canadian government.

Re: Will Canada ever join the U.S.?

I am sorry but I have to disagree with you guys...Maybe it's not gonna happen in the very near future...but I have a feeling it's doomed to happen...The two cultures are just different...The majority of anglophones don't really care about learning French or the French culture and the majority of francophones resent that they have to learn English and despise the English influence all over Canada which they think is corroding their French heritage...Their motto "Je me souviens" which means "I remember" is a clear indication that they don't want to forget how the Brits took Canada from them. Also, the last close referendum shows how more francophones want to secede than remain with Canada. Don't forget that there are about 1 million anglophones living in Quebec which helped to tip the balance to an almost even vote between the two...otherwise the outcome would have been in the francophone's favor. With their own independent immigration department the francophones are trying to attract more francphones into Quebec who will eventually tip the balance to their favor when it comes time for the next referendum.

If and when Quebec seceeds, the rest of Canada will not have a choice other than to become part of the United States.

dm543 Nov 3rd 2002 7:20 pm

Are you aware that the population of non-french speaking people in Quebec is growing faster than french speaking people?

You can keep dreaming about Quebec seperating, because it's not going to happen, and even if it did happen, why would the rest of Canada have no other option than to join the US?

Re: Will Canada ever join the U.S.?

Canadians are NOT the same are Americans.

Canada is cleaner, MUCH safer and has better health care. Canadians enjoy more freedoms, are nicer people, are not as ignorant of world events, better educated, enjoy cheaper education and are LIKED a lot more than Americans.

To join the US would be a detriment to Canadians, not a benefit.

Re: What if Quebec seceeds?

The French lost at the Plains of Abraham; the British should not have been so nice to them; they should have kicked them out of Canada, in the same manner as the Acadians. If Quebec wants to go, then they go without the St Lawrence, which would include Montreal and Quebec City. Let’s see how long they last then! They will be American within 5 years, and lets see how accommodating the US would be to their “distinct society? “Distinct, would become “extinct, they are trying to hold onto something that is not there. It is their fear of failure and their own lack of initiative that has led them to this, like a cowering dog in the corner.

Canada should not join with the US. Anyone who says they are the same are not looking hard enough. Sure they both play base-ball eat fast food and love their malls but the same could be argued of the british...but no-one would dream of saying the UK is just the same as the US...they are totally different nations in every way except the superficial. Canada and the US are likewise.

Canada is a better place than the US in many ways, to join the US would mean sacraficing many things which are central to the canadian way of life.

As for Quebec, sure they moan a lot....thats what French people do...its exactly the same here in Europe, but Europe would not be Europe without the French, and likewise Canada would not be Canada without Quebec. Canada should not be seen as some english speaking nation with a Francophone plug-in. Canada by definition is about the union of anglo and francophonic people.

That Union of English and French speaking people - that recognition that two different people and cultures could come together without either of them losing their identity is what Canada is all about. The US has nothing to compare....in the US, everyone is moulded into the same singular american identity...without which the US would implode. Canada is unique in the world at having managed to build a single nation out of multiple cultures and even languages. Its an amazing thing...though often unstable.....Canadians should be proud. They've done what India and Pakistan failed to do, what Israel and Palestine failed to do what Northern Ireland and the Republic failed to do. Its remarkable and its the Canadian way, it couldn't be more different from the American way.

Canada is one country on this Earth

Hi All,

I think we should not talk about breaking Qubec and rest of Canada. We all have single nationality. We should respect each other language and culture. So Canada is single country
thanks.. Rahul
