We lived in a one year old house with windows like this, makes it really dark & miserable inside. Plus no light in the center of front rooms here, which drives me insane!
Pretty much all houses are the same situation. They have a slightly bigger window in the living room, but that's about it.
We now live in a house built in 1979 & same thing, tiny windows, dark miserable impression. Doesn't help that around here they seem to have an obsession with paint that is all shades of poop!

I don't get the lack of ceiling light in the living room, guess it's another thing to get used to
+1 on the colour charts used. I never thought I'd see the day when builders magnolia looked appealing

+1. The only 'smaller' windows we have are in the basement and they are much larger than those shown letting in plenty of light. In fact, so much light that I usually flip the blinds closed in the home cinema room.

It seems we can safely conclude that not all are small as some are bigger than others even when in basements.

I still maintain that is a normal size window ( in the original picture) that is semi obscured by curtains halfway down
