Yes but that thread has become a sleazy outpouring of fetishistic fantasies as well as expressions of lust for AdrianTO. I suggest steering clear.

Other than at any of the salubrious places round the corner that you've probably visited DBD... *cough, steamworks, cough*

Re: why are so many Britons emigrating?

Love this “journo” use of wordage ” 1.8m British people have left but only 979,000 have returned.” Roughly translated to real English 1.8 Million people left and just over half of them came back
Kind’a states that the grass really isn’t that much greener after all
And when you consider so many invest so much that returning isn’t an option it not as wonderful as many would like to make out

Make you wonders..... I think many leave because they can cash in their houses equity and live it up somewhere where they think the cost of living is lower.
Shame that they find that the wages are often lower so the cost of living works out to be roughly the same, but without a fully expensed medical system, TV that is actually worse than the UK, Crime that is almost the same, and politicians that are even more corrupt than the one they always complain about

Re: why are so many Britons emigrating?

So very "telegraph" that they manage to find stats from when Labour came to power, as if that triggered an exodus, and that the first comment from an expat when I tuned in blamed "uncontrolled immigration" as the reason they emmigrated.

Immigrants complaining about immigrants, I never tire of that irony.

Re: why are so many Britons emigrating?

While I can't speak much about the UK or it's people, I can say that much of today's emigration is happening simply becuase it can! That is to say, emigration (or at a minimum: leaving your country for a year or two) is a world trend due to the ease of such moves. Air travel is affordable, people are waiting to start families, technology allows you to almost stay as connected back home as if you were there, and finally, Human convergence (aka, the melting pot). While just as many europeans are moving out, just as many foreigners are moving in (plus of course new born kids.....over population; no matter where in the world you live!!)

Although this seems to be a widely held belief on BE I don't think its true. Just that British politicians are better covering it up/carrying on regardless.

Isn't there always a brain-drain when Labour are in power? I vaguely remember the last Labour government from when I was a kid, and it was big news; there was even some suggestion (probably in the Telegraph, for all I know :)) that the government might introduce exit visas so skilled workers couldn't get out.

When people say they're leaving England to get away from the immigrants, I doubt they're complaining about, say, American doctors working for the NHS.

Lots of people think the grass is always greener somewhere else. Sometimes it is - but sometimes it isn't.

Re: why are so many Britons emigrating?

I first fell for Canada (the people and the Country) way back in 95 and would have happily cashed in my return ticket and stayed if I could have and also if my wife would have.

The feeling of "being back home" every time I returned to Canada never has left me to the point that in 2004 my wife asked if I was going to get grayer and older and regret not having tried the move to Canada.
So here we are now trying to get everything cleared up, boxed up and sold up hoping to move in January (if the house sale goes OK).
If people were only leaving the UK to get away from something then they are leaving for the wrong reasons.
While there is much wrong (as well as very good) with the UK our real reason for heading to Canada is we want to do it and because it is a dream. We also have a picture of what we want when we get there.
And if you don't follow your dreams......
I think the mass exodus we hear about today consists of a lot of people chasing their dreams.

I know just what you mean; every Monday morning my 5 yearold boy asks "are we going to canada this week?"

Initially it was before his birthday - September, then we said before Santa comes; now it looks like it will be the New Year, poor child just cannot understand why we have to wait.

All I know is that we will realise our dream eventually, despite all the set backs.
