Re: Why are people so defensive about Canada ?
If I could bring some things in Canada here to the UK I would take:- 1/Tim Hortons 2/The service in the bar and grills 3/The wide 3 lane roads 4/The more relaxed nights out on Weekends.
But I agree with what you say, you could argue all of my things up there aren't really meaningful, just subtle lifestyle changes.
If I went the other way I'd take 1/UK Radio and TV 2/Proper sports 3/Cleaner supermarkets with real choice and decent tasting bread. Milk in bottles as opposed to packets. 4/Decent public transport

2/The service in the bar and grills - Can't see a big difference, except for the false 'have a nice day' and false smile. I would hate to see all these places in the UK, if you were to blindfold me and take me to a Kelsey's, Keg, etc etc, I'd have no idea which I was in but I could tell you whats on the menu without looking, their all the same, just fancy burger joints with beer.
3/The wide 3 lane roads - Good god no!!! why?? The UK is biased quite a bit towards pedestrians, not over here. All the main roads where I live are two lanes, people dawdle in either. Have to stop when someone turns left, have to stop when someone turns right as pedestrians are crossing the road at the same time cars are allowed!! I find that the main roads in the UK are almost as wide in any case, just as its single lane cars can get past.
4/The more relaxed nights out on Weekends - At last... one I can agree with

Good. We need to push the envelope on this one.

Re: Why are people so defensive about Canada ?
I have read through many post on this website and also contributed to many.
One thing that strikes me is how defensive those Brits who have moved to Canada have become about Canada. If anybody says anything that contradicts their belief of the Canadian Utopia they have moved to they are beaten down, ridiculed, post deleted, called names like troll. Where has that Brit sense of humour gone, that British pride.
Brits make their homes all over the world and one thing the world likes about Brits is their Britishness and pride.
Reading through some post I am starting to think Canada is kinda like a 'Stepford Wives' kind of society. Anybody who does not follow the strict rules and has any other opinion is to be exterminated.
Why is it that the Brits who have emigrated to other parts of the world are still proud to be british yet the ones who have moved to Canada slag Britain off at the nearest opportunity ?

I am still proud to be British, but also prepared to defend Canada from wild generalisations, or being cast in a particular light on the basis of one persons experience when I know many people who have experienced the opposite. Some people leave the UK for Canada because they dont like what the UK has become, so you would not expect them to be pro UK. Others come because of what Canada offers, others yet to be with canadian spouses. Wild generalizations in my opinion just make people look narrow minded.
The truth is that Canada is so vast that there is always the potential for wildly different immigration experiences, and that makes for conflicting opinions of the place. Generalisations dont work, and you couldnt be more wrong about the "Stepford Wives", there are posters here who present there views from both the pro and con side of the fence, and personally I think this is a pretty tolerant and civil forum and will do my best to keep it that way.
As for the last part of your post, you obviously need to spend more time in the Oz forum..no shortage of people prepared to rip into the motherland there!
No post gets deleted because its anti Canada, post are deleted for trolling, or if they are going to adversely affect the relatively friendly and helpful nature of this forum. Trouble makers here just to start arguments wont be tollerated for long though.

When I was at the dep in Aylmer (on rue Front near the marina), I stayed away from the wine.,...truly scary looking stuff.

That's the one. It specialises in bulk sales. You get 15% off if you buy by the case.

Hmm, talk about painting with extremely broad strokes. So many wild generalisations in one post its hard to take it seriously.

I agree with Iaink. I would object to wild accusations and generalizations about England just as much as Canada. I can remember years ago when I did live in England, we had company from Canada and they did nothing but talk about how wonderful Canada was and how crap England was. After half an hour of that kind of talk - we felt like telling them to hurry up back to Canada because were were sick of it.
I think when you live in a country, I don't think it really matters how long you have been there - you kind of "own" the country and when some outsider criticizes it, you don't like it. Its fine if I criticize my own sons, but it really ticks me off if someone else does. Its none of their business! For me the same goes about wild generalizations of Canada.

Canada is your adopted country, and ironically the Queen is still head of your state. In troubled times, which embassy will you run to ? The British of course, because they will bail you out because you are a British citizen.
If Canada and Britain were at war you would soon see how Canadian you were. Love your adopted country, but still have respect for where you came from, because for a lot of people if it were not for England they would not have the financial means and support to set up home elsewhere around the world. Never burn your bridges unnessercarily.
Both Britain and Canada have good and bad points.

Quite. I grew up in Brighton. I still go there ocasionally. The staff on the Palace Pier, last time I went there, seemed to be mostly Poles. A vast difference between them and the zit-faced, disinterested yoofs I'd seen on previous visits.
Some of the comments I've heard taxi drivers make about Poles have left me disgusted. I have a stock response ("do you remember why Britain declared war on Germany, and which nationality made up quite a chunk of the Battle of Britain pilots?"). It's a bit of a conversation-stopper.
