I've lived in Leeds and London and I wouldn't call them safe places. I've witnessed assaults on buses, violence with knives on trains, vandalism, racist abuse in public places. These are common in the UK and Brits have accepted it. Why should I accept it too when I have a chance make my kids live in a place (at least where I live now) where these acts aren't common?

My point is that the fact that you may have witnessed these (and I am curious about how frequently) does not make them generally common nor it the case that they are accepted in Britain (whatever this means). A counter-example would be the general reaction to the BNP being on Question Time - there was certainly no indication that Britain in general is in any way tolerant of racism. The things you list happen everywhere - and certainly in major cities.

It's quite justifiable to be concerned about social problems within your immediate community but to make broad generalizations about social pathologies on limited data and examination sounds a little hollow. Secondly, to further use your 'understanding' as justification to move to another country without comprehensive and rigorous comparative analysis strikes many as blinkered at best.

Again, my experience is different. My 'non-white' friends never suffered from any racial abuse and this in Norfolk which is not noted for its ethnic diversity. I am quite happy to accept that people will have different personal experiences of all kinds around the issues being raised (racism being only one of them) - I simply have a problem with the generalisations being made.

No. I am stating that my and my families experience of racism in this part of Canada is virtually non-existent. This is in contrast to the everyday casual, and the occasionally very nasty and explicit, racism that we, and our circle of friends and acquaintances*, experienced in the UK.
A comprehensive and rigorous comparative analysis cannot change that experience. Nor will it make SambaDeAmigo feel any less safe in Canada.
* admittedly a small and inevitably self-selected sample.
