Why can't I buy a sandwich here ?
All I want is the option to buy a simple sandwich (and maybe a small packet of crisps/'chips') during my office lunch hour. I don't want a honking Godzilla sized sub where they ask you a 101 questions about types of meat, cheese, salads, dressings.......and make you feel self-conscious when you ask for 'tom-ato' instead of 'toma-toe'. No wonder people get fat here.
On days like this I miss M&S / Boots / Tesco etc.

I enjoyed a very nice ham and cheese sarnie, made with butter and with the addition of just lettuce, on wholewheat bread yesterday lunchtime. And this was in little ol St John's. I'm sure they have sandwich bars / bakeries / takeouts in Ontario as well. Perhaps look a bit harder?

Heaven forbid you should have some choice over what veggies and sauces are put on your sandwich.
I still remember the choices available being a bit daunting. It just takes a while to get comfortable with the different way of doing it, and really I suspect its just the familiarity you are seeking.
Besides you can find premade sarnies here, but they are not popular as people would rather have it made fresh how they want it....
Tim Hortons wont grill you too much over how you want a sandwich ordered from them if that helps.
I have long since abandoned tomah-toe in any food serving environment..."when in rome" and all that.

I yearn for the UK where all my food options are so much simpler.
Coffee.
Burger.
Chips.
Beans.
In Canada you can even choose the type of bread you want!! Outrageous.

I prefer to make my own but if out and about I love having the choice of which fresh bread I would prefer and what I'd like to fill it with. They'll even toast them here for you too
Having your sandwhich freshly prepared in front of your own eyes is far better than one made yesterday or the day before in a factory .

When I was on holiday here once I was getting exasperated by the choices you have to make all the time so instead of asking for coffee I thought I'd have hot chocolate. Pretty simple you may think, but no, did I want marshmallows, or cinnamon
Now I am quite at ease with asking for a "large decaf with milk and sweetener"
It throws you to be sure. I think you are being rotten to the OP. The frustration is, i think, more to do with acclimatisation than really wanting a plain sandwich. It gets easier once you know where to go and what to ask for, but its frustrating having to work out everything.
Dont be so mean!

I remember feeling really ticked off during a writing course that I did in Melbourne. The drill was that we would bring an essay to the class, read it to our classmates, and they would give us their feedback.
My essay was about my recent visit to my brother and sister-in-law, who lived on a farm, outside of a very small town in another state. In the essay, I referred to that town as a village.
One of my classmates said, "You've used village in the English sense of the word." I was proud of myself for biting my tongue, but what I actually wanted to say was, "The English sense of the word? FFS, what other sense of the word is there?"
But I didn't say that. I plastered as pleasant an expression on my face as I could muster and said, "Oh?"
My classmate went on to explain that, in Australian English, the small town I had visited would be called a township. In Australian English, a village was even smaller, what British people would call a hamlet.
Sometimes it is hard to implement that quotation that hot wasabi peas provided in another thread, the one about accepting that other people's reality is valid. Sometimes you do feel that they are a failed version of you, at least that is a feeling that I sometimes have had. For a split second in that writing class, I had the feeling that Australians were seriously messed up (but on the whole I really, really liked them).

They ask if I want it toasted. I say no. I end up with a toasted sandwich. Every time. Same with the bagals.
I'm surprised when I get a coffee that isn't toasted.
