Why are Canadians scared of..?

Yasmina, get off your high horse and read the damn study again. It matters not wether you are an immigrant or a resident.
The study STATES that it is your name not place of birth that is the barrier, in other words if you are born in Vancouver and have the name Ahmed Farouk you are far less likely to gain employment than if you were born in Australia and carried the name Charles Wong who in turn would be less likely to gain employment than Joseph Smith who was born in Hong Kong.

It's funny - innit? History is full of similar name prejudices, be it in Canada or Europe. I seem to remember in my sixth form history class a story of a funny little moustached Australian chap by the name of Odalph Hilter who set up shop in Germany back in the 30's. He ran into all kinds of problems and prejudices because of his name.

There are many companies in the GTA (especially in Brampton) who are well-known locally to only employ people from their own culture. English isn't a language used regularly by either their staff or clients apparently. In a number of Chinese malls, you'll rarely see a non-Chinese member of staff.
It's harder for everyone to find work these days. It may be discrimination one way or another, but try proving it.

I could also ask Why are british scared of...?
I am a qualified vet nurse with many years experience, but here in UK no one wanted to know me...They merely heard my accent and didn't see me.
I even tried medical offices, I would call and ask if job still available and where to send cv, they said "job filled" I had my british friend call and she asked exactly same as I did..result: yes the job is available and we are accepting applications!!!!
so don't bash Canada...everyone wants to stick to their own, its human nature. And as many people are out of work all over, people seem to be more willing to hire the people who have paid taxes in that country all their lives, raised their families...it might not be fair, but it's life, I had to get used to it here, it happens all over...

I did an little experiment here a couple years back as I was having issues get interviews at the time, I removed all the US citys (I had only worked there at the time) and changed them to Canadian citys on my resume (my company happend to have operations in Edmonton so it was useful) and started to get interviews.
My wife said it was a coincidence but I dont think it was. Luckily I sound and look "Canadian".

What is the point of this thread ?
The labour market will have inefficiencies built in but most times, the law of supply and demand will take precedence, and employers will want applicants whose skills sets match the demands of the job. Take a walk down Toronto's financial district and you're struck by how many people from every corner of the world work here.
I work with individuals who can barely talk English, who coalesce at lunchtimes with their fellow countrymen and rarely socialize outside of work, and yet are in the high income tax bracket due to their in-demand skills sets.
And that most symbolic of constitutional positions (albeit an imperialist anachronism) - the Governor General role - is not exactly occupied by a balding white guy with a stale sounding British name.....

Please don’t give that study too much merit. Hard work and dedication will go a long way in Canada.
