but you can't tell me that Peterhead is similar to Kentville etc , yes there's lots of coniferous trees, but the landsape is generally so flat it's not close to Scottish Forestry in general terms
if you're comparing the Tartan tat available in Hfx , then yes you could equate this to the chintzy gift shops in most towns back home
strip away the Brigadoon veneer and they're no more Scottish than King Idi
better quit now , feel myself slipping into fear & loathing in Hfx mode

Re: Who didnt like living in Nova Scotia?
The one negative comment about Nova Scotia on this thread seems to be constantly that of a student's opinion- not very relevant actually dbd. My kids went to uni in Quebec and Ontario and none of them enjoyed living there either.
I have lived in 3 provinces and have visited most places in Canada, apart from Manitoba and the north, and the winters everywhere- including those - suck. Yeh- it's great if one wants to sit on the chairlift at -40degrees or if one is keen on the most violent sport on the world but apart from that the summers and scenery in most places are exceptional but as a tourist specialist said this week unfortunately Canada is a tad boring and does not appeal to tourists and guess what that is the same living anywhere in Canada. We are all isolated in our provinces and we have to make the best of it.
There is nothing perfect about Nova Scotia but we are not far from Europe- yippee, and there are plenty of jobs here other than lawyers and teachers. Housing seems to be very affordable for immigrants compared to other places albeit we do pay more taxes than some other provinces.
The problems living in Nova Scotia are no different to living anywhere in Canada other than we have more history here and it really is up to an individual to try it out. Will I live here when I retire - no, actually, but I will not live anywhere in Canada because of the 7 month winter. It is tough to keep fit and do my jogging in cold weather.
I was jogging around Point Pleasant Park this week and the temp was in the 26 degree range and it is glorious being able to run along the Atlantic Ocean and see the loonies diving down and the ospreys searching for food whilst the cicadas are reminding us of what a temperate climate we do have here.

I don't think anyone should build their life around that opinion but I do think "small town, very provincial" is a fair description of Halifax. Halifax isn't all of Nova Scotia of course, I very much liked Cape Breton though obviously Meat Cove is no more cosmopolitan than Halifax.

Your anti- Halifax comments always surprise me considering your posts about enjoying the history etc in Europe. I love coming into Hollis Street here with all the Georgian and Victorian properties- looking one way at the sea and the other at the Georgian gift - the Citadel Clock- to Halifax from Queen Victoria's father, the Duke of Kent. Nowhere else is like that in Canada but geographically Cape Breton is no nicer or worse than anywhere else.

Old Quebec city is exceptional and certainly reminds me of Europe but it does not have the British historical connection hence not like Halifax.

Re: Who didnt like living in Nova Scotia?
Thanks everyone who replied to my posting. Just wanted to know the good and bad of living there, good to know the down side of somewhere and why people felt that way. Sorry if it sounded negative, I didnt intend it that way at all, just my northern bluntness coming out perhaps! Got slightly confused re: germans, sausage, beerfest etc. but hey what the heck.

Personally I love it though I do know a family that hated it. They came from Milton Keynes and couldn't wait to get back. Apparently everything is much nicer in Milton Keynes. I haven't been to Milton keynes since the 80s so theres the possibility it has changed quite a bit but as I recall anyone who likes Milton Keynes is destined with absolute certainty to hate Nova Scotia!

Curious as to why you asked the question anyway? What would it tell you to hear about people that hated Nova Scotia?
