White goods/tv's/etc
 

Hi all (again),

I know im posting a bit today but as ive previously said im trying to get as much info as possible.

Our kitchen appliances/3D tv/Playstation and alike will these work in Canada or would it be better to sell them and buy new in Canada.

obviously if there not going to work we will proberbly save money on shipping.

If you're bringing more than just suitcases (ie. a container), bring them all. I'm a real "spread the word" missionary that mos things will work; either under their own steam or with a transformer. I think there are some compatibility issues with canadian playstation games and UK machines, but if you already own bunch of games, they will still work here with your UK machine - on your UK television. It will cost you unbelievable amounts of money to replace everything as soon as you arrive. You can do at leisure over time.

We came over last summer and had so much conflicting advice.
So this is our experience ..........

We brought over quite a lot of uk appliances and in retrospect wish we had brought more with us. We purchased a couple of step up step down transformers from http://www.voltageconverters.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=VC100W . Power depends on what you want to run, the lower power ones will run radios, bedside and table lamps (bring a supply of bulbs with you), video players etc. the higher power ones we use to run our sons amplifiers and guitar mixing desks, large uk tvs, which don't pick up Canadian TV (the more modern ones may ) but will run uk dvd players, x box, wii fit etc, and makes a great large screen for pc games etc. We also brought our expresso coffee machines etc. I wish I had brought with us more of my electric kitchen appliances, mixers blenders etc. The cost of purchasing a few transformers is far less than the cost of buying everything new. Pack a couple of long lead UK extension power boards to plug in your UK stuff into the transformers. We had our bose surround sound converted here to run on their power at a very low cost. We did not bring our washing machines or fridges etc as most houses appear to have them in as standard.


By using the transformers many of our power tools can be charged so they are useable. We use our laptops and a HD power lead to play our dvds on our Canadian tv. thus allowing you to bring all of your UK games and films.

I know many would say they are going to start again, but we found we were endlessly spending money on low value electrical goods and at least for a while you can make do until they wear out and you can then replace them.

Just check the voltage on the items you want to bring and purchase the correct power transformer, if you want to run several things just buy a bigger one and plug in an extension board.

UK Mobile phones that use skype are good as they can be synced with your modem so you can have a skype phone in the house. We pay about £40 a year for a UK skype number which allows our UK family who do not have a computer to call us for the cost of a UK call on a London number (free if it is in their contract)- a good one for aging parents. Have a good long distance package on our phone with Telus although there are plenty of companies out there who offer good packages.

If you are paying for a container then pack it full! Note on insurance on electrical goods- ensure the packing list has aabsolutelyeverything on it in detail!!!!
