Re: Where to live in Toronto
We live right at Jane and Lawrence, and though it's not an unsafe area and our residential neighbourhood is lovely, I wouldn't recommend it for a person in their 20s and only here to see the city for a few months.
It takes 45 mins from here to the Yorkville area where I work, subject to no delays, but the good thing is that there's a choice of heading south to the Bloor line or west to the University line on the subway, so I wouldn't say transportation is crap, it just takes a long time! I'm with everyone else here in that you can afford something much more central, that will give you a better experience for such a short stay in the city. We bought here as it's the only place in the city west of Yonge we could afford that offered us the space and garden we wanted...but plusses are it's got great links to the highways if you're driving. We're madly crossing our fingers that the Jane corridor gets cleaned up over the next few years! Best of luck in your hunt and enjoy Toronto - it's great in the summer! |
Re: Where to live in Toronto
Thanks so much for your honest opinion HSJones, much appreciated and very helpful from someone who lives there. The house I was looking at sounds like a great place but I think you're right.
There seems to be a few options in Cabbagetown, and I've read mostly good, some bad points about this area. If anyone has any thoughts on Cabbagetown I'd be grateful! Cheers! |

As mixed an area as Toronto offers. Some beautiful houses, lovely parks, the Riverdale zoo, walk everywhere from there. Always people who have pissed themselves on the main street.
I love it. As good a spot as any for a good time. |

It's a real mixed bag area but with pulenty of character. Hipsters and down and out folk sort of rub shoulders. I would have no issues at all living there if the accomodations were to my liking.
We're too old now though. |

For what its worth i have several colleagues who live there, they seem to like it and it is pretty handy for most places. |

Re: Where to live in Toronto
Is very important to try to find comfort and security within a new place to live, however it also depends on what your capable of spending and what your needs are like. Great areas of Toronto:
1) Bayview area: Great environment, beautiful surroundings, parks, and is very close to the city public. 2) Forest Hill area: Is also a great environment, libraries, lots of schools therefore lots of families, and very nice and friendly area. Its also quiet which can be an advantange if you want to rest from work and city transit. 3) Richmond Hill: is not really in the downtown area or very close to the parts of Toronto where perhaps you want to be, however is really nice and you will enjoy living there. there 3 areas mention so far which are very nice and sounds great, but of course it all comes with a price: Apts of 1-2 bedrooms or bachelorette is between $750-$1,075 In other areas is below this digits, but dont expect the same parks, environment, and other things that may be offer, however if you look really good you may find better places at cheaper prices in this same areas but that's what the costs are around right now. |

The first two are rather suburban, I wouldn't suggest the OP goes north of Bloor. The latter is ridiculous, it's not anywhere near Toronto and isn't really in the GTA.
