Where to go, social work
 

I have an open work permit through IEC and am a social worker here in the uk. I need to get my qualification certified but need to think about where I want to head/where jobs are before I do this.

There are jobs in ontario at the childrens aid society but don't want to be in Toronto and have heard very humid summers in all of Ontario. Want to be in a decent city with things going on - I'm not into clubbing but scenery, unique places to eat, not a run of the mill n American town.

Ill be going alone so being somewhere friendly, easy to meet people is vital, but so is having access to cycle and walking trails and water, not winters like Winnipeg have (-35 for 9 months). I can cope with the cold but maybe somewhere not quite as brutal as Winnipeg and preferably decent summers.

Expecting too much? I'm willing to compromise just really unsure

Hi

I relocated to Regina about 6 weeks ago and qualified in the UK as a Social Worker. I know that you would have to have your qualifications assessed by the SW board in Ottawa.

I am sorry I am not able to provide more help as I have only started the process. In Regina..they have extreme weather conditions...very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer

Yes, I have a masters in sw, so hoping my qual will be recognised. Good luck in Regina.

Unemployment is high in Peterborough, whether this works in your favour by making everyone miserable and in need of help i know not.

No, I don't want Toronto and am wondering about these places, is it very humid in summer? What about winters? Also wondered about Ottawa.

Also interested in Alberta or bc, any suggestions? Ontario because they have social work jobs which I see advertised regulary in child protection. I don't want to be too remote.

I've been to lots of places in the states and to Winnipeg. The parts of Winnipeg I liked were parks and Osborne village. In denver I loved the bike trails and scenery around the area, Boston the array of independent shops and stuff going on. Is there is anywhere that you can recommend that fits these kind of things that anyone could recommend?

I would suggest you do a lot of research and reading, use www.google.ca to look at City tourist websites, read the wiki City guides and when you have narrowed it down, you can come back and ask specific questions about specific areas. http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Catego...da_City_Guides

Could anyone advise me on these places?? Whats it like? meeting people and good summers and biking trails nearby a must. I'd be renting.

Trouble is, most of these places are huge, it'd be like a Canadian saying to you 'London, what's it like'?! It'll be difficult for anybody to sum up an entire city for you.

Really your best bet is to search the forums, read all the other threads on these places and then try and narrow it down.

Did you say you didn't want humidity? Scrap Ottawa if so.

Now your saying people can't give me an idea of what a city is like? That seems odd I would have no problem telling you what I think london is like. I've see. Other posts on here where people have asked about a city and got an answer.

For general info on the cities you've mentioned, Google or the Wiki are your best bets, but it's too vague a question for the forum really. If you could tell us what you want (or don't want) and be far more specific, then you'll get more help.

Info like what kind of housing budget you'll have, what kind of commute you'd put up with, what kind of climate you want (or don't want), whether you'll want to have a car or rely on public transport, whether you want to be able to have access to ski slopes, or ocean, or etc, whether you want direct flights to the UK or be able to hop easily across the border to the US, etc, etc, and hopefully people can help you narrow it down a bit.

The place that springs to mind from the brief info you've given (scenery, no humidity, no severe winters, access to water/cycle trails) is Vancouver, but you seem to be focusing on Ontario despite the humidity?
