Where to get a 220V plug?
 

I have a few UK things that need at least 220V (one is a battery charger for a cordless drill, one a charger for a lawnmower). I read somewhere that someone here simply 'converted' a UK 4-plug extension lead by cutting the plug at the end off and replacing with a Canadian 220V plug, then plugging that in an outlet in the garage.

I have tried to find a Canadian 220V plug but no success as yet (the guy in RONA looked blankly at me, but I suspect he would have given me the same reaction if I merely said 'hello'!). I do have such an outlet already in the garage.

I did exactly what you said, I cut the UK plug off a 4-way I brought with me (powering an old stereo system and a cordless screwdriver). This is what I got from one of the big box DIY stores, I can't remember which one, but possibly Home Hardware (I find the people that work there actually know where stuff is). I plug it into a 220V outlet in my garage.I couldn't find a link to the actual product on their website but here are some pics so you can see what it looks like - might help finding it in the store.

Home Depot. Note that a 220v outlet is different from the 110v ones in your house. I had one in my garage with a 220v circuit for a welder that I used to plug a 220v electric fan heater into. (but now powers the minisplit heatpump in the garage).

Be Careful with your apparent "obsession" with converting Uk electrical items to Canadian

There is no such thing as a "220 volt plug" - In Canada they just run different outlets for different purposes - A 220 volt circuit could have a variety of outlets - Canadian Tumble Dryers operate on 220 volt and theoretically a dryer plug on your battery charger would work - However in practice it will not !!!

Most Canadian 220volt appliances operate with a 3 core cable (plus earth) UK 240 volt operate on a twin and earth, you can run a 220 volt twin cable but, it seems you don't know too much about electrical

Don't do it !!!! - Don't even try -
With 110 volt you live to know you wired it wrong - -220 volt will kill you !!!!

Use a step-up transformer or power supply that plugs into a normal 110 V outlet and delivers 220 v output.
Just make sure the appliance you are powering is OK to work like that.

Buy new equipment, they're not exactly expensive here. :)

No thanks. Our battery lawnmower would cost $800 in Canada!

Thank you, but as I said in the original posting, I already have a functional and professionally installed 220V outlet in the garage.
