It really is all relative, isn't it? |

Yeah - I was looking at a job at Middlesbrough General Hospital a good number of years ago- I had a look round and despite being invited to interview for the job which was very busy ( Part of the job involved patching faces back together after assaults, car wrecks etc) I declined- certainly at that time it was a real sh!thole, I wonder if it has improved?
I'm guessing that it hasn't improved since he was back in 2014. |

Thank you all, I really do appreciate the recommendations, comments, warnings and all. We will be moving to a rural ish area as we want acreage.
I've lived in some, ahem, "interesting" parts of the world (Johannesburg for one) where personal safety is a concern but since moving to Canada its been mostly unicorns and rainbows and I love that, I love the sort of calm, quiet, rural Maritime quality of life and we'd like to move somewhere which still has that. Some of our PEI friends have gone so far as to say they'd rather live in Jo'burg than Moncton or Halifax when we've talked to them about us moving. None of them have ever actually been to Jo'burg - I suspect they have a u-turn of opinion if they did but it did make me a bit paranoid. |

wow, cant wait for you to see the difference. I persinally have not been to Jo-burg but have seen the crime documentaries on it and from living in NS I would say you are safe to come here
We're going to try and visit both NS and NB over the next two weekends, but we're pretty certain that its the Lunenburg/Bridgewater area of NS which we think would be best, my husband prefers the sound of the job offer in that area too rather than the one he's been offered near Fredericton. When I'm well enough again I can work from anywhere with an internet connection, and I fit work in around being a stay at home mum so no worries there. Plus I can do as much or as little work as I like without much pressure which is lovely and works perfectly for us. |

. I have just read Lunenburg, a who done it, by a British writer, set, unsurprisingly, around Lunenburg and it sounds lovely. My husband goes to Halifax a lot and really likes it and thinks I would have been happier had we moved there. I hope to visit this summer. I do hope that you enjoy your trips. Moving can be super...the promise of excitement  |

I think it's a bit generic to say Cole Harbour is bad. There good bits and bad bits like anywhere...
I am basing this entirely on my experience of delivering Petrol to the Shell station on the main drag. They have those outdoor speakers with music blaring country and western at 4am on a Sunday morning when the bloody station is closed. Excruciating. |

Thanks Millie I will update, I do love the look of the Lunenburg area, and the sound of it. That said I think I like the sound of Fredericton better than Halifax as a "big" city within driving distance. If only real life was like the sims heh? I was in Charlottetown today and I will miss the place, I love it :) |

Re: Where to avoid in NS or NB to live?
Lunenburg is a beautiful place, and is surrounded by beautiful country.
The church has been beautifully rebuilt after arsonists set a fire that it burnt down on October 31 2001 .......... it was 250 years old, the second-oldest in Canada. Luckily they still had the original plans in the archives which had been moved only a few years previous from the basement of the church to Halifax. I have photos of the church before it burnt and of the restored building. ....... the only problem is all those damned tourists crowding the main street, the coffee shops, always stopping to take photos, and making life difficult for the residents  Actually, I think my favourite place in NS is Mahone Bay ........... unfortunately also become much more touristy in the last 20 years |

A swap sounds like a great idea, perhaps we could introduce a rotating homes/lifestyles scheme? :D |

My favourite place in NS is Chester, its got a lovely waterfront restaurant called the Rope Loft and the whole place is delightful.
I have just been for a lunchtime walk around Truro. Gotta say that the place has grown on my in the last 6 months. |

I think the Coal Harbour area of Halifax might still be an area to avoid, although it has improved somewhat in the last 15 or so years ........... it was an area where there not many role models in the sense of locals making good, joining the police, becoming an NHL player, etc.
Having a local girl join the RCMP really opened some eyes as to opportunities other than standing around on the street corner and selling drugs! |
