My 2 cents worth ...

There are a lot of North American chain type restaurants: the Keg, Moxies, Cactus Club and so on. There are many more. Boston Pizza and White Spot are BC based. In general they are OK in an OKish sort of way. Useful for business lunches but I wouldn't go out in an evening to one (unless someone gave me a gift card). The food tends to be high in fat and overseasoned for my taste.

In Vancouver there are a lot of ethnic restaurants. There are a lot of ethnic people too so the food is less customized to apeal to white people. Good or bad depending upon your point of view. IMO generally better value than the chains.

Shopping: you can go to your local supermarket and do a weekly shop. However, you will generally be paying more for inferior quality food. To get value you need to shop around, to get quality you need to choose specialist stores. Get your bread at a baker, produce at a green grocer and so on. Costco is best for a big shop.

Must we live on a diet of only Canadian food now we live here, according to you?
Or can we embrace some parts of Canadian life and still indulge in things from another country along the way?
I don't think Aviator is suggesting that we eschew British food and culture, totally. It does seem, though, that some OPs on this site would rather that Canada was just like Britain, the way go on about not being able to get Walkers Crisps, "British" fish and chips -- surely, they would only be obtainable in Britain? -- and lamenting the quality of the TV programming, conveniently forgetting that a good percentage of programs are made in North America.

Canadian television isn't just terrible because the programs are made in the US but because it has more adverts than programs.

This is currently warming up for my lunch.

It's a proper home made beef and onion pie

Look for the PBS stations. In Vancouver they are channel 5 and 27. They carry many of the better British dramas and documentaries - including crime dramas. The US shows that seem popular in the UK now are all available as well though you need to navigate around many channels to find them. No SkyTV but hundreds of channels available (many an extra cost) via satellite, cable or DSL.

PBS stations are commercial free. The down side is they have regular begging evenings when they nag you to send them some money.

That is so very true! And just you weren't paying attention, they repeat ads two or three times during the same ad-break! Makes you want to shoot the telly.

What do you care? It is only recently you stated you don't have/own a TV set.
