Zellers reminds me of Woolworth's.
Sobey's or Safeway, Sainsburys (both are pretty expensive)
Walmart- ASDA (obviously)
Canadian Tire (auto section)- Halfords
Canadian Superstore- Tesco
For catalogue ordering- Sears (I hear nothing but people complaining about Sears though)
Shopper's Drug Mart- Boots
Rexall Drug Store- kinda reminds me of Superdrug
Home Depot- B&Q, there's also Rona and Home Hardware for DIY supplies.
Chapters- Waterstones
The Dollar Store and Dollarama for cheap essentials, much better than the UK pound stores.
The Source, Future Shop- Currys
The Brick- Harveys
Old Navy- Primark
The Bay- Debenhams
M&M Meats- frozen meat products an frozen ready prepared meals- kinda like Iceland I guess.
Sangster's- Holland & Barrett
Payless Shoes- Shoe Zone

There's also several familiar names such as La Senza, HMV, IKEA, Costco.
Does anyone have an equivalent to Maplin Electronics (in particular in Nova Scotia)? In the US, there's Radio Shack. I don't really fancy having to drive 10 hours to visit a store I like just wandering around.

I'm not a big fan of the source tbh, a lot of their products are way over-priced.

For example, a couple of years ago I was looking around for a DVI to HDMI cable. The source had one and wanted $130+tax for it (FFS it's just a bunch of copper wires...).

I ended up getting a $10 HDMI cable from Superstore and a $10 DVI to HDMI adapter from Walmart and I've had no problems with them at all.

well, yes, I agree - but the post asked for an equivalent to Maplin. The Source is it. As with Maplin, there are better places to buy made-up cables etc, but if you're after anything even slightly more unusual in the way of components, it's the most convenient retail option. There are others online, and in Toronto at least there are a bunch of independent electronics stores. I can't answer for Nova Scotia.

For anything cable wise - I use www.monoprice.com, not a real shop I know, but I'd rather wait a couple of weeks than to get royally raped by The Source...

The Source is a store that must be on its last legs.......who would buy a computer or TV there. Satellite radio is something else they heavily feature and it is on the wane here it seems.

The 'Source' near me, tried to sell me an extended warranty on a $12 joke gift for my OH...one of those things that keeps a coffee cup warm for hours...the extended warranty was $8....I gave them a withering look and declined.

Yeah - we had a look round a 'Source' when we were in Halifax, NS. It struck me as much more of a Dixons or Currys (or similar store) - over priced and (as previously mentioned) try and hit you with an extended warranty for three years on something that should damn well last thirty years.

I was thinking more (like Maplins) where yes they try and sell you over priced cables (which you can get elsewhere), but also electronic components (like resistors etc) - and ideas for things.

There's no less than FIVE The Source's in Windsor - which quite frankly is ridiculous, how they all survive is beyond me! There's TWO in the same mall, it's not a massive mall either, crazy!

The Source did in fact go under earlier in the year, as they were owned by Circuit City in the States, who went under. They sold The Source to no less than Bell Canada - who probably can afford to run them at a less than profitable rate seeing as they're fleecing Canadians on communications products....

I only go in there when I see something on clearance - I recently got two xbox 360 games for 96 cents each

It's my opinion that many of a British expats woes would be solved if John Lewis opened a few stores here. Obviously with the Waitrose part.

They settled for what Canada had to offer and stopped bothering about what they can and can't get that they used to buy in England.
