There are always supermarkets like Whole Foods and Urban Fare if you're willing to pay the $$$
Over priced though and unsurprisingly hectic during lunch & at the end of the office day. I heard that some of the staff are rude? I've never experienced this...especially when I'm salivating at the bakery

I was thinking about this the other day. One of the challenges that some people find when moving over is that they are looking for certain shops from home that they cannot find in Canada. For example, when I got here (to BC) I quickly worked out that these make pairs (sort of):
UK Shop - Canada Shop
Boots - London Drugs/Shoppers Drug Mart
TK Maxx - Winners
eBuyer - Newegg.ca/NCIX.com
TM Lewin - Tip Top Tailors
Next - American Eagle
But there are a few I cannot pair up. I was wondering if someone could help this new Vancouver resident?:
M&S
Primark
(plus I'm still trying to work out the entire scale on the supermarkets)

What about Mantique? or are they unique to vancouver? Sort of an upper end Top ShoP perhaps? I also like Mexx - sort of in the same realm I suppose

Holt Renfrew is quite a nice shop in the style of a department store. Perhaps it's analogous to John Lewis. The market is different though, people in Canada who have money don't shop here, even ordinary people who want something nice for a special occasion don't shop here, whereas affluent people who live in the UK do shop in the UK and rich people from abroad shop in the UK; there's more of a market for expensive things there.

Found it pretty funny when the parents visited and recognised so many shops - obviously the concept of globalisation passed them by...... Think they were expecting Bear and Seal skin shops etc

Pretty much all of the supermarkets have them - with the exception of Walmart....

Are you talking about the handheld scanners you walk around with or the tills where you scan them yourself? I haven't seen the former here, but the latter are common - I won't use them though with more than a dozen items, too much like hard work!

No Frills is pretty much a Lidl with more brand names.
Zellers reminds me of Woolworth's.
Sobey's or Safeway, Sainsburys (both are pretty expensive)
Walmart- ASDA (obviously)
Canadian Tire (auto section)- Halfords
Canadian Superstore- Tesco
For catalogue ordering- Sears (I hear nothing but people complaining about Sears though)
Shopper's Drug Mart- Boots
Rexall Drug Store- kinda reminds me of Superdrug
Home Depot- B&Q, there's also Rona and Home Hardware for DIY supplies.
Chapters- Waterstones
The Dollar Store and Dollarama for cheap essentials, much better than the UK pound stores.
The Source, Future Shop- Currys
The Brick- Harveys
Old Navy- Primark
The Bay- Debenhams
M&M Meats- frozen meat products an frozen ready prepared meals- kinda like Iceland I guess.
Sangster's- Holland & Barrett
Payless Shoes- Shoe Zone
There's also several familiar names such as La Senza, HMV, IKEA, Costco.
We haven't found ourselves missing any of the UK stores as there's plenty here that are equivalent if not better than some of the UK stores, the only one I'm really missing is Debenhams as I liked their clothes ranges.
