What to wear for interview
Ok so I have an interview for an estimator/project manager on Friday. I have been told it is to be an informal interview with the lady from HR. What do I wear? Do I go smart casual or wear a suit? What about a tie?

Re: What to wear for interview
Rule of thumb - so I have been told - Dress one level higher than the job you are applying for. Just because it's an "informal" interview, doesn't mean it's informal dress.

Re: What to wear for interview
Smart casual I would say.... tie perhaps, but not a suit.
|
Re: What to wear for interview
I'm another one that says suit and tie.
I work in HR now - dress and look smart :) |
Re: What to wear for interview
A suit will not be wrong. In the worst case it will be more formal than you need and assumed to be a feature of being British. An open necked shirt might be wrong, even if you do have attractive bristling and a valuable medal on an expensive chain. I'd do the safe thing.

Re: What to wear for interview
wear a fur coat, wellington boots and a hockey mask
but seriously, this is canada not mars, wear what you would in the UK smart casual / informal / blah blah blah.... its a job interview.... rarely does the expression 'Dress to IMPRESS' hold such validity. good luck! |
Re: What to wear for interview
You can't go wrong with a suit. If you feel the company might be a little less formal then you could lose the tie.
That being said, the last interview(s) I had here were business casual but I did have a pretty good idea of corporate culture beforehand. |
Re: What to wear for interview
Thanks guys, I was think of wearing a suit, just needed confirmation.

Re: What to wear for interview
Suit and tie.
Don't even consider wearing anything more casual, especially for the position you are going for. Many other people going for the same interview might take the 'informal' bit too literal and you will have the advantage over them. Trust me, even if all the other candidates wear less smart stuff. From my experiences I would say this is a first getting-to-know-you type interview to see if you're a good fit, before any more 'formal' interview with the big boss later. That's what the 'informal' part means. |
Re: What to wear for interview
same as others, go for smart, better to be over dressed than under, good luck:thumbsup:

Suit AND tie? What are we in, the 1950's?
Go with a smart suit with NO tie. |

I went to an "informal" interview or "chat" as they called it.....i wore a suit and tie, its shows you are proffessional and serious about the position.....I dont think you can ever be overdressed for a job interview... maybe if it for a labouring or casual type job yes, but not for anything else. Good luck! Paul |

I don't even know how to fasten a tie

Do what all other guys do. You get your wife / Mom to tie it for you one time, then every time afterwards when you take it off slip it over your head without unfastening it. You can keep it that way for decades.
I think i'll remain firmly planted in modern times and not wear one. It'll be easier for all involved i think. |

Re: What to wear for interview
Drifting the thread slightly. I've had all manner of vendors come visit me trying to sell me stuff at work (current and previous employers.) It's always interesting to see how they might be dressed for what can be a formal occasion. Some do come suited and booted, particularly some from the larger organisations and the senior guys. Most are business casual, some wear plaid, the odd one in jeans. One example that caused amusement was the guy from Ottawa who visited Newfoundland in early June. Now in early June, I believe it is hot(ish) in Ottawa, but in Newfoundland it can be 2C, rain, drizzle and fog, which it was on this occasion. He arrived wearing chinos, a golfing polo shirt, a light waterproof jacket, sandals and no socks. Now I did think that the sandals and no socks was inappropriate for a business meeting, but since he spent his 36 hours in St. John's freezing his arse off, I derived a certain amount of amusement and placed the order with him anyway. He wasn't as amusing as the guy who came to see us who was very obviously drunk but that's another story......

Re: What to wear for interview
OK I wore the suit and tie. It was dress down friday, but the woman from HR thanked me for making the effort. The interview went well and she has told me they want me back next week to meet the owner.
I hope all interviews go this well. 1st application and a second interview:thumbsup: |
