What are these black plastic things on the bonnets of cars?

The bug deflectors are actually very crap at deflecting bugs - the manufacturers are trying to reinvent them and call them stone deflectors. Works on our truck because there's not a hint of a chip on the bonnet (sorry hood).
As PP says stay well away from car bra's. People think they are protecting the hood when in effect completely the opposite. Small bits of dirt and gravel get stuck underneath it and end up rubbing against the paint work making more of a mess than if you didn't have one.
And they look gay.

I was quoted for a "nose" on the front of the bonnet/hood. I think they look terrible, but I was told it prevents stone chippings. No mention of bugs. Undecided at the moment.

Yes as MMC says, they do prevent stone chips but make more of a mess than you would get without, especially if you live in a damper climate, big rust issues.

Was it a car bra or a bug deflector you were quoted for????
I would think a bug deflector because dealers unless they have a screw loose, won't even consider the bras.

Just don't call it a bonnet - you'll get laughed at.
