Does credit rating in the UK work the same as US? As in no credit is almost as bad as no credit?

My credit score in the US now is low and in what you would consider the bad credit range, but there is nothing on it, as I have been outside the country so long now everything has dropped off.

I had 700 something when I left in 2003, according to credit karma its now 510.
