Your post in which you listed things you disliked about Canada.

The third item on your list was "3. French-Canadians & Acadians". Quite how that's any different from the post you seem to have taken such great offence to is beyond me.

It's different because the post that was removed listed every possible ethnicity and then included a "catch all" for people not listed; it was clearly a joke. The one that can be seen as being offensive is not about ethnicity, it's about other things and ends with an irrelevant insult to the French. It's as if the author had written a piece on the weather and ended it "the Russians are stupid"; it fails as humour and it fails as insult.

It must depend on your point of view then, as I didn't see that 'it was clearly a joke'. We had several complaints about that one from people that obviously thought it was serious too, but haven't yet received any about Alex2201's post.

My point was that dthomas has complained about Alex2201's post, failing to see any humour in it and accusing him of being a bigot. Which is fairly harsh considering he posted almost exactly the same comment earlier in the thread.

The name "bigot" is thrown around on this website far too often in my opinion. What the poster usually means is: "I don`t agree with your opinion, therefore you are a bigot" Not realising how stupid they sound.

This is just a pure example of political correctness gone mad personified in an open forum. It is perfectly fine for someone to say that they don't like white english speaking "cradles" or "Canadians are this or that" etc, but as soon as someone else is mentioned, ei "French" or "Indian" or "Asian" or "immigrants" and something is said about them then everyone seems to be offended in some way. It would be funny if it wasn't so insane.

Maybe 'hypocrite' would fit better in this particular circumstance?

But with pronounciations..... which is correct for 'Lougheed'?

Low-ghee

or

Lock heed

That's because it's usually directed at you.

I'm talking about places in N America with British placenames, like Scarborough, ON or Norwich, VT. Surely the people who originally named the places knew how to pronounce them and surely people know that placenames are not pronounced phonetically, e.g. "Arkansas". Although I never cease to be amazed at the number of Americans who pronounce: "Illinois" as "Illinoise". (But it's French anyway so they're still wrong.)

However British people pronounce a lot of placenames incorrectly too, the one that comes to mind is: "Nevada", which everyone there kept telling me has no "r" in it, pronounced: "Nuh-vad-uh", not "Nee-var-duh". Spanish is a much more phonetic language and the "r" in Spanish is rolled, so if you see a Spanish-named placename without an "r" in it, then there is no "r" sound in it. So I'm told. At length.
