Re: What do you LIKE about Canada?
Oooo, I like this thread ..it's making me have a wee think about all the things I'm grateful for ...thanks, Fuschiagirl.
We love ...
...the laid back vibe on Vancouver Island
...the sea, the small islands, the parks, the fresh air and the SPACE
...the friendly people ...we are still getting people saying "Welcome ..we're so glad you chose to come here" TWO years later
...the wineries and farm shops we have locally
...that we could afford our lovely house
...less traffic, no chavs or gangs of marauding teens.
We're lucky and we flippin well know it! I'm getting out there now with my fine Canadian dog.....

I love the scenery - we live in North Vancouver and the view coming over from downtown is out of this world with the mountains ringing the horizon.
I love the people, although Canadians seem to take everything totally literally which is strange, and I really like the lack of pressure on children. In the UK it's all ofsted this, standards that, and my son's preschool here is very laid back, letting them just play and enjoy being kids, with less emphasis on learning stuff and reaching milestones, and more on just having fun and socialising/sharing. Incidentally, he loves it!
Finally, I love the fact that there is so much to do really close to where we live - skiing, sailing, kajaking, Stanley Park etc etc - oh, and I can dream about living in Deep Cove one day when my ship comes in as it is beautiful.....
The only downside is missing family, friends and the familiarity of the UK - these are big pulls and should not be underestimated.

Used to love strolling up Lonsdale on a hot sunny evening watching the road disappear up the Grouse. Italians and Iranians/Persians sitting outside their shops or taking a walk themselves. Very nice atmosphere.

I like the fact that having to shovel the "light rain" off the the drive means it will be worth heading to the hills after work. I can also head out on the longer summer evenings for a couple of hours without spending most of that time driving there and back whenever so inclined.
I like the live and let live approach of people here. People are generally very nice.
I like the cheap sushi.
The lack of a general feeling of aggression in society is great too.

You're giving our policemen apoplexy. Not really recommended.

It's home. I was telling my best (Canadian) buddy just today how blessed we feel to be here and to be so happy; the whole family.

Canadian's (except when driving!)
Camping in the summer.
Skiing in the winter.
Year round sunshine.
No rain (well hardly ever!!)
Going to the mountains....summer or winter.
Being able to afford the above.

Ooo, that's true. I really noticed the difference here compared to the atmosphere in the UK when we were there at Christmas....less cynicism here too.
(Then again I do miss the British sense of humour so swings and roundabouts .... We visit our favourite Scottish butchers here for a dose of "the banter" regularly!)
