There seem to be no direct flights from UK to Halifax now

There are none until May when Westjet starts their seasonal service to Gatwick. And thats dependent upon them substituting in another aircraft to replace the grounded 737Max. I'm confident they'll do that - they did last year and I traveled that route twice. Air Canada's service will remain suspended until the 737 Max is back in service - as is the direct St John's - London flight. I wouldn't expect to see the Max back in service before end June earliest.
In the meantime, you'll have to fly via Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto.
